Diceman Creations was started by Ed Bowkley (also the
editor of Model
Maniacs magazine) in
1993. Like so many of today's GK modelers, he had built the Aurora figure
model kits in his youth. It was while recuperating from back surgery in the
late 80’s that he discovered the blossoming Garage Kit hobby, and he
was immediately hooked! His renewed
enthusiasm for model kits didn’t diminish; in fact, it evolved from a
purely personal hobby into a thriving business endeavor. It became his ambition to create model
kits of subjects that he wanted to have in his own collection,
perhaps make a buck or two to continue with more projects, and have something
to trade with other kit producers to stock up on even more kits for his now-infamous
collection-- perhaps at some time in the future, we may post a few photos of
the over 800 PLUS-piece stash of model kits Ed has
greedily hoarded away! :) |
|
After two years as a retailer, selling kits made by several
East Coast GK companies, Ed finally made his dream a reality and Diceman
Creations was born! A little known tidbit of information is that after
roughly 3 years as a GK producer, Ed was sought out by the Special Effects
industry for molding & casting of props! He relocated to the FANS!! |

Our Chief Sculptor |
|
By
1996, Ed Bowkley had teamed up with Ed White, who has become the sculpting powerhouse of
Diceman Creations. Up to that point, Mr. White had sculpted only a very limited
number of pieces for his own personal collection, unsure of the talent he
possessed. Needless to say, his talent as a sculptor as well as a modeler
cannot be denied! The pairing of the "Ed Twins" became the
talk of the GK hobby. Although they come from different backgrounds and live
in different areas of the country, the two have similar likes and dislikes in
kits and movies-- something that has helped
the Diceman Creations line of kits expand into so many different types of
subject matter! As with the majority of U.S.-based GK sculptors, Mr. White
primarily works in heat-cured polymer "clays" such as Super
Sculpey. Although he has not had formal training in sculpture, he has
developed his own tools & techniques for sculpting, along with a
style that becomes stronger with each new work he completes! |

Mr. White’s sculpting ability has garnered
the praise of many of the hobby's biggest fans, memorabilia collectors, a
wide range of celebrities, as well as many of his sculpting peers. He is now
a much sought after sculptor for other GK companies, and has sculpted for
(among others) the now-defunct Fatman Productions
and Posthumous Productions. His meticulous attention to detail (a result of
the research he does on each subject), and the remarkable likenesses he is
able to capture makes it easy to see why he is so much in demand. To
somewhat ease the burden placed on Ed White, some other sculptors have loaned
their talents to the Diceman Creations line. Some of the names will be very
familiar to you veteran modelers, some you'll be hearing A LOT more of in the
near future. Joy and Tom Studio, Matt Manit, Jim
Phillips, Jim Maddox, Tony Aranjo, Vance Rudzinskas, Bennett Edmunds, Pat Tantalo,
Jim Fawkes, Rick Wyatt and
Joe Riley! Quite an impressive line up if we do say so ourselves! |

Our Kits |
|
|
As Diceman Creations grew, it was inevitable that licensed
pieces wouldn't be far behind. Pictured to the left is Sara Karloff, who so
loved the House of Frankenstein kit that she immediately approached them to
license it. From what seemed like overnight, many people started to want to
have pieces done by the “Ed Twins” and were more then willing to
sign licensing agreements with them! Jonathan Harris, Bob May, Michael
William Kaluta, Michael Berryman and the "Cool Ghoul"
himself… ZACHERLEY (to name just a few), with others on the way! |
|
With
our growing fan base in the hobby and our ever-increasing line of kits, It
became apparent that many kits had to be discontinued to allow us to keep up
with the demands of production. For that reason in late 2001 Diceman
Creations instituted a “12 and out" policy-- meaning that kits
produced by the company will be available only for a period of 12 months. This is the only way that we can keep up the
breakneck pace we've been on. This has also increased the desirability of the
Diceman Creations line of kits. It’s not unusual to go to a show and
see a “sold out” sign on the table within hours of the show
opening. Keep that in mind next time you plan on attending a show! |
