Fortuna

Each player rolls once each round, and may choose to apply the resulting event to any player, including himself. Some events apply to all players, e.g. Social War.

1 Gold of Tolosa: May only be played on a governor of a province/territory where the Cimbric Horde has passed. If none such, then a small treasure has been found in the affected province of which the governor share is 100 talents and a legate’s share is 35. Otherwise, the Germans left behind a large hoard of gold and silver, now discovered by the governor. If the governor or legate is a player, they may choose to accept the normal governor’s share of 100 talents (35 for a legate) along with 30 prestige, or attempt to divert the lion’s share for themselves, receiving 2d10 x 200 (65 for a legate) talents but losing 1 prestige for every 200 talents received. On a roll of ‘00’ the thief is caught red-handed, and is tried for treason (but keeps the 4000 talents).
2,3 Wrath of Apollo: Pestilence strikes the affected province. Roll 1D6 for each element in the Roman army of the province before battle, and a score of ‘1’ means that element has been destroyed by disease.
4,5 A Tribune of the Plebs: The affected player is allied with a brilliant Tribune of the Plebs, and may secure three different LEX this round for free. In addition, the player may veto the action of any magistrate, prevent passage of other people’s LEX, Senatus Consultum, and prevent trials. This remains in effect until the Tribune becomes a demagogue, is assassinated, or rolls 5,6 to move on to his next step in the Cursus Honorum.
6 Demagogue: Counts as Tribune of the Plebs if one has not been played. A brilliant, unscrupulous orator has fired the Forum crowds while serving as Tribune of the Plebs. Violating the Mos Mairoum he stands for Tribune again. The affected player may add 10 prestige to one player’s total or subtract 5 from all other players total, and gains the effects of Tribune of the Plebs for this round. Other players can obtain LEX for 10 talents. A payment of 10 talents will veto any LEX, or SENATUS CONSULTUM, or TRIAL. This remains in effect until the Demagogue is assassinated or a 1d6 roll of 6 indicates the Demagogue has gone on to more lucrative endeavors.

7 Demagogue Revolts: Counts as Demagogue unless Demagogue is currently in effect. A powerful Demagogue (such as Saturninus) attempts to have himself proclaimed King of Rome. During this round no LEX or Senatus Consultum can be made or any trials attempted. On a die roll of 5,6 Saturninus seizes control of the city and the players have to attempt to retake Rome. Demagogue’s army is a Big Battle DBA army with 3 independent commands: The mob 1 x Servile Revolt II/45b, The gladiators 1 x Servile Revolt II/45c, and the disenchanted veterans 1 x Marian Roman II/49. As long as the Demagogue is in control of the City, no province draw occurs, all governors are prorogued, and any legates who are not prorogued are assigned armies in Italy of their correct size (praetorian, consular) for the purpose of defeating Saturninus.

8, 9 Jugurthine War: Must be played on African province. Jugurtha manipulates the assassination of most of his rivals as King of Numidia, with the survivors seeking protection of Rome in the African province. The governor of Africa may fight a foreign war against Numidia, as can any legates in the province, if Numidia is not already at war. If this comes up after or during a Numidian war, Jugurtha journeys to Rome and seeks the approval of the Senate for his kingship, and any player may sponsor a Senatus Consultum which approves his nomination as Friend and Ally. Once passed by the Senate, this ends the foreign war. If this comes up a third time before Jugurtha is approved, then Jugurtha returns to Numidia and defies Rome. When Numidia goes to war because of this event, or if this comes up during a war, Numidia’s aggression is 3 until such time as Jugurtha is killed or captured. If this event comes up after Jugurtha is approved Friend and Ally, he reverts to neutral status. Repeated play after this raises aggression to 3 and starts the war again. If Jugurtha is killed, or the kingdom conquered, treat as 18 Desert Invaders.

10 A Rich Aunt Dies Suspiciously: A rich aunt dies under suspicious circumstances, and her will provides the affected player with the 20 talents. However, rumors implicating the player in the death cost him 10 prestige
