WATKINS ON DARFUR: CONGRESS SHOULD TAKE ACTION NOW!
The Rev. Dr. Sharon E. Watkins, General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), joined other religious leaders to call on Congress to take action in response to the continuing crisis in Darfur.
In a letter to Congress, major religious leaders, including Dr. Watkins, urged "more substantive action" to deal with "the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Darfur." The letter states, "It is a travesty for the most powerful country in the world to acknowledge genocide and do nothing about it. . . . By naming this crime and doing nothing to stop it, the United States allows the genocide to continue with impunity." The leaders therefore called upon Congress to prove "the sincerity of [their] proclamation" by taking "all necessary action to pass the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act (S. 1462 and H.R. 3127) before the 109th Congress adjourns this year." |
