Notes: Recorded at Kingsize in Chicago and produced by the mysterious Ducky. From the cover art to the lyrical references to
paranoia, conspiracy, and the delights of The Days Inn on Diversey,
this release has a decidedly down feel. Despite a brace of good songs -- "Insignificance", "Lucky Devil", and "Ice Rink in Berlin" are my
favorites -- the record never seems to get moving. Which might be the point. Their last full release on vinyl (though eagle-eyed
shoppers might still find sealed copies of the limited edition 2-platter set in the cheap bins; I did) and my least-played Mekons disc.
Lineup: Private "Tommy" Atkins, vocals, guitar, and synthesizer; Oberlieutenant Von Timmz,
vocals & guitar on "Submerged"; South Wales Borderer, vocals, guitar & machines; W.S.P.L.F. Corina V.C. & Bar,
bass & vocals on "Submerged"; Galloping Major LaFalce, drums beyond the call of duty. Supported by gallant rear guard action from:
Gunner "Mitch" Milligan, vocals on "Spirals Of Paranoia" and barked orders on "Hostile Mascot" & "Our Bad Dream";
Bombadier "Barry" B., vocals on "Our Bad Dream";
Sapper "Honey" Honeymoon, fiddle and Missing You All with the Doom Platoon;
Lance Corporal "Willy" Goulding, drums on "Chemical Wedding";
Petty Officer "Sammy" Ladvig, electric guitar on "Submerged", acoustic on "Insignificance" and "Chemical Wedding", group solo on "Our Bad Dream";
Generalissimo Trumfio, drumstick guitar on "Machine" and backing vocals on "Never Work";
Morag McHoneyperson, piano on "Our Bad Dream";
Private "Mickey" Hagler, sampling & background vocals on "Never Work";
Private "Gomez" Henderson, backing vocals on "Never Work".
