![]() Taken January 21, 2005 A Ribeira — Porto, Portugal This picture features the whole travel crew: Mom & Pop Fails, Jen (as the center of attention), and Danae & Jerry. It also features the ribeira, or the riverside, which is a famous touristy place in Porto right along the Rio Douro (the Douro River). It is pretty because ofthe colorful, old european houses. |
![]() Taken January 21, 2005 Irmã Neto — Porto, Portugal The traveling crew with Irmã Neto. She is a wonderful sister in the Foz Ward who was always very kind to the missionaries! |
![]() Taken January 21, 2005 Irmã Bemvinda — Porto, Portugal Another sweet sister, Irmã Bemvinda. She just turned 90, and is as lucid as ever! She was so sweet, and even though we declined refreshment, she lured and trapped us in the kitchen to have some of her tasty morsels! An amazing lady and an example! |
![]() Taken January 23, 2005 Braga's Chapel — Braga, Portugal Bispo Ricardo, Elisabete, and Ricardinho (their two-year-old son) along with Danae, Jerry and Jen. Ricardo and Elisabete were baptized around the time I served in Braga. Since then, they dated, married, were sealed in the temple, this new chapel was built (the first constructed chapel in the city), they had their son Ricardo, he became bishop and now works for CES in Portugal. Elisabete is an amazing women, with incredible energy (Ricardinho taps a little bit of that energy I'm sure). |
![]() Taken January 23, 2005 Braga's Chapel — Braga, Portugal Daniela, Geraldo, Madalena, Irmâo Lages, Danae and Jerry. The Lages family besides being energetic and stallwart members, always fed (and still do) the missionaries Sunday afternoon. Little Geraldo isn't little anymore and is getting ready to serve a mission! :) |
![]() Taken January 23, 2005 Braga's Chapel — Braga, Portugal Família Ferreira — a family with seven children that Jennifer taught while she was in Braga. They were baptized the week before we got there. They received the Gift of the Holy Ghost the Sunday we were there! It was an honor and a privilege to get to know such an amazing family and to feel their testimonies! |
![]() Taken January 23, 2005 Braga's Chapel — Braga, Portugal Manuel Bento, Theresa (Bijou), and their cute little daughter (Sofia?). Manuel Bento and Theresa were and continue to be stallwarts in the ward. |
![]() Taken January 23, 2005 Braga's Chapel — Braga, Portugal Fernanda was always sweet, kind, and helpful member. She is now the Relief Society President. Theresa (in the last frame), Elisabete (above) and Fernanda were all students in the English class I taught for community service. The class was a lot of fun! |
![]() Taken January 23, 2005 Igreja Bom Jesus — Braga, Portugal Jen & I with the beloved city of Braga behind us in the valley. This picture is taken from Bom Jesus a Catholic Church built on a hill overlooking Braga. |
![]() Taken January 23, 2005 Igreja Bom Jesus — Braga, Portugal This is looking up the stairs leading up to Bom Jesus. |
![]() Taken January 23, 2005 Sameiro — Braga, Portugal This is Sameiro a larger sanctuary built on the hill close to Bom Jesus. |
![]() Taken January 23, 2005 Sameiro — Braga, Portugal I had to take a picture of this, because it was so beautiful — one of the nicest depictions of Christ I've seen at a Catholic Church. Here, Christ prays amid a grove of olive trees. |
![]() Taken January 23, 2005 Feira Nova — Braga, Portugal We had tried to call the night before, but were unable to from the hotel, so we called a day late to wish Dad Cann a Happy Birthday. Here, Danae speaks to her Dad. |
![]() Taken January 24, 2005 Hotel Grande de Paris — Porto, Portugal The traveling crew minus me in our hotel in Porto. Mom had never had the red carpet rolled out for her — she really liked that (good call Dad ;))! |
![]() Taken January 24, 2005 Torre dos Clérigos — Porto, Portugal Danae overlooking Porto from the highest tower in Portugal! |
![]() Taken January 24, 2005 A Ribeira — Porto, Portugal Since we had to grab a couple souvenirs, we went back to the ribeira where we each enoyed a Magnum bar (an ice cream bar). Here is Danae eating away, with seagulls, the Rio Douro and Gaia in the background. |
![]() Taken January 24, 2005 A Ribeira — Porto, Portugal Back to the ribeira. This is looking at it from across the river from the city Gaia. Also pictured is a traditional caravela used to carry wine (what Porto is most famous for). |
![]() Taken January 24, 2005 Some Street — Gaia, Portugal Jen and Danae smiling happily in the car we used to drive around Portugal! |
![]() Taken January 24, 2005 Santuário da Fátima — Fátima, Portugal So the tripod wasn't quite straight! :) I'm sure mom really likes this (crooked) picture of Fátima. This sanctuary was built in honor of an special apparition to three children (see http://www.santuario-fatima.pt/portal/index.php?id=1310 for a full history). Many people make pilgrimages to this place (walking, sometimes with barefeet, sometimes on their knees) as a demonstration of their faith. |
![]() Taken January 24, 2005 Santuário da Fátima — Fátima, Portugal Danae liked this "no cleavage" sign that they had along with other things that shouldn't be done in this holy place. You can see the cell phone below. Danae is anxious to show this to Young Women, and how they should be modest! :) |
![]() Taken January 24, 2005 in , Portugal Santuário da Batalha — Batalha, Portugal Danae, Dad and Mom look at this building whose construction started in 1388 to commemorate an important battle only a few years earlier (for a concise history see http://portugal-info.net/costaprata/batalha.htm). |
![]() Taken January 24, 2005 in , Portugal Ocean Overlook — Nazaré, Portugal We barely made it to Nazaré (Nazareth) in time to see the end of the sunset, but it was worth it! Here two beautiful ladies are poised in front of a magnificent ocean sunset backdrop! |
![]() Taken January 24, 2005 in , Portugal City Overview — Nazaré, Portugal Jerry & Danae with the city of Nazaré in the background. |
![]() Taken January 24, 2005 in , Portugal Ocean Overlook — Nazaré, Portugal One more sunset pick with Mom, Dad and the girls. |

What happened this week ... After picking up Jen we spent Friday in Porto, Saturday in Coimbra, Sunday in Braga, and Monday on our way back down to Lisbon. These days were especially enjoyable because we spent them visiting people Jen and I know and love! We love all of you and hope and pray that you feel our love, but most importantly that you feel the love of our Father in Heaven and His Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior!
Love,
