Sonnet IV

After Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926)

Come, you brave and tender-hearted lovers,
Walk in the path of those not known to you,
Allow your cheeks to touch their trembling faces,
And share with them your brightness joined anew.

Come, you joyful lovers, restore to health
Those you can. You are the luminous light
Beginning the curve of your destined aims
Exploring the ideal, sun-lit places.

Do not fear suffering. Do not fear pain.
Give heaviness back to the earth again.
Mountains are heavy. Oceans are heavy.

Once you planted trees in special places;
They’ve grown too large; you couldn’t lift them now,
But you will carry the winds and open spaces.
