Contributions from the Eighth Annual Five Year Predictions

Predictions made in 2004.
SubmitterPredictionsCommentary
Derek Lewsey We will either have lost contact with, or otherwise lost control of the Rosetta Probe. Nope. Appears to still be going strong.
Jay Moore will have come out as having Parkinson's.Nope. Instead he's got a crappy sit-com (Gary Unmarried) that was picked up for a second season.
Father of the Pride will be off the air having failed to last even a single season. What a disaster.
Survivor will still be on the air, as will Fear Factor.Survivor, yes, Fear Factor, nope.
China will have launched probes headed to Jupiter or Saturn. Not yet. Nothing particularly interesting planned until at least 2014.
We will have a flatscreen TV, probably Plasma. Not exactly by choice, this one came true. Our TV died and there wasn't really any choice but to replace it with a flatscreen.
We will have an HD-TIVONot quite. We have two HD Comcast DVRs. Not exactly Tivo (I still miss my Tivo), but certainly light years ahead of a dumb tuner.
One or more companies will routinely (>= 2/month) be sending paying passengers into space (beyond the 100 km mark). Not yet. If you want to be a space tourist, you'll still have to shell out about $20-30 million to the Russian's to hitch a ride. However, Virgin Galactic has supposedly pre-sold several hundred suborbital flights.
The first (of many) earth-sized planets will have been detected. In April of '07 an Earth-sized planet was discovered.
10 GB compact flash (or equivalent) will be available for $100.On Amazon today, you can get a 32 GB SD card for $94.
Most camcorders will record to Compact Flash (or equivalent) rather than to tape, and will sell for <$300 (US)Not most, however you can get a Flip camcorder (doesn't use an SD/Compact Flash card, but rather plugs directly into your PC as a USB storage device) for about $130 on Amazon.
Standard for digital still cameras will be 10 Mega Pixel SLR, for under $300 US.10 Mega Pixels is about right, but the SLRs aren't quite the standard yet, although there are plenty of options available for between $500 and $800.
At least one deliberately genetically modified human will compete at the 2008 Olympics. Not even close.
Safeway will be trying out RFID-based self checkout in a few select stores.Safeway has self checkout all over the place, but it's the same old barcode scanner. Home Depot even has self checkout.
Average life expectancy for an American born in 2009 will be 110 years. Not quite. In 2008, the average American life expectancy for babies born in '06 was 78.
An Earth-sized (or smaller) planet will be discovered around another star.Yep.
A contributor to the '04-originated predictions list, or someone directly known to them will be set up to give excess power back to the grid. (Said excess most likely being obtained from solar panels)Nobody I know.
A reality show will involve "ordinary" people being sent into space. Not yet. Not even on the horizon.
Inge Vander Horst The concept of 'carbon neutral' activities/movies/etc will be promoted. Carbon expenditure is calculated for something specific (e.g. to fly somewhere, or to produce a movie) and then compensated for in equal amount elsewhere (e.g. planting trees, investing in wind power). This will be used as a selling feature for vacations, films, etc.
The next step in functional foods: like we now have eggs that are enriched with Omega 3 fatty acids, we will be able to buy milk and maybe even some meat enriched in this way. I've never run across anything about this, but apparently, this one's come to pass.
We will know of people who no longer have land lines for their home phones, but simply rely on cellular instead.I don't. I kind of wish I was one of those people, but since I still don't even have a cell phone, clearly that's not me.
I will just be re-entering the workforce, having taken an extended unpaid leave of absence after the birth of our second child (remember, that's little Gracie, as predicted last year).
We will be able to use cell phones to purchase things -- the cost will show up as an item on your phone billAgain, personally not a cell phone user and haven't heard much about this outside of Japan.
Alice Lewsey Derek & Alice will have a Plasma TV Check.
Derek & Alice will have completed landscapingNope. In fact, we've moved from the house Alice was talking about here (at the time of the prediction, the backyard was done, but the front yard was just dirt & weeds) to a house that has a landscaped front yard, but a backyard that is (still) just dirt and weeds.
Derek & Alice will have completed painting and furnishing the interior of the house.Again, we'ved since moved from that house, though the house we're in now has been fully furnished and painted. In fact, we just finished adding stripes and circles to the kids' rooms a few weeks ago.
Derek & Alice will be buying a 10 GB compact flash card. The cards are certainly available, but since our camera can only handle the 2GB (SD) variety and we have no other use for them yet, we haven't actually bought one.
Reality TV will be popular, but Survivor will be finished...Mark Burnett will have something current running.Reality TV is certainly still popular and Mark Burnett does have something current running: The 19th season of Survivor!
Sattelite Navigation systems will give optimized directions based on current traffic conditionsI guess this is now available, we don't have a gps system.
Andrew Kerr Osama bin Laden still not caught. Check.
Iraq will be a fundamentalist Islamic state, such as Iran.
Another major terrorist strike will have occurred on American soil. Not yet.
Derek, Alice & Family will be living in sunny Los Angeles, Calfornia!!!Nope. I can't imagine this one ever panning out. Why L.A.?
...
Maybe if one or both of our beautiful children become movie stars!
The NHL will have shrunk to 24 teams from its current 30ish teams. There will only be 4 Canadian teams left.30 Teams. 6 Canadian.
Candian dollar will be worth around $0.90 US.$0.92 US as of 9/26 '09
CDs will start to become obsolete as more and more people switch to iPod-style devices.
VHS tapes will have gone the way of 8-tracks and LPs.What's this 'V-H-S' you speak of? :)
Shortly after released Java to the open source community, Sun Microsystems will go bankrupt.Open source Java? Not yet.
Bankrupt Sun Microsystems? Nope.
