DXing
is the hobby of receiving distant radio and television stations by a variety of
ways. Great descriptions of DX signal propagation and other information as to
how DX occurs can be found at www.dxfm.com.
DXing can be a very exciting hobby, as it is always fun to find out what you can
pick up on the radio via different signal propagation methods. I've been DXing
for the past 9 years, and have witnessed many changes in my area to the FM &
TV band, such as new stations signing on, some changing their FM frequency/TV
channel, countless call letter & format changes, and the introduction of IBOC
(HD Radio), all of which changes the playing field for DXing. Next year the analog
TV stations shut down and will broadcast only HDTV, providing different DX opportunities
than what we currently have with both analog and HDTV signals on the air. As you
can see, it's a great time to be a DXer! Suprisingly, I came across DXing
by accident. I decided to listen to my boombox radio one night in 1999. While
dial scanning, I noticed a station playing music on 104.5 FM, with clear stereo
sound. I first thought my area had a new radio station, as there were no local
radio stations on 104.5 FM. Upon further listening to this mystery signal, I found
out that I was, in fact, listening to WNVZ 104.5 from Norfolk, VA, which was 124
miles away! I had no idea how I was hearing this distant station so clearly in
the Washington, DC metro area. I soon found that other Norfolk area FM & TV
stations were coming in, too. Over the next few nights, I found other radio and
TV stations coming in from nearby cities such as Philadelphia, Salisbury, MD,
and Baltimore. I started to keep a log of all of these stations that I was picking
up, and in the process, became an avid DXer. In April 2008 I became a member of
the Worldwide TV-FM DX Association,
the official club for FM & TV DXing. You can view the various sections
of my website by clicking on the links at the top of the pages. The About
DXing section has information about DXing, such as signal propagation
and DXing Tips, as well as pictures of my DX shack and links to my DX logs, among
other things. The FM DX section has HD Radio and
RDS screenshot pages, DX audio files, and more. The TV DX
section has television screenshots, from both analog and HDTV television stations..
I have links to many other great DX websites in the Links
section. The Site Map section
has a list of all pages in my site in case you can't find exactly what you are
looking for.
