KNAUB

First Knaub Family in Kautz:

The FIRST KNAUB, first name unknown, died en route to Russia, before 8.08.1766. He was a farmer, of Lutheran Faith, from Darmstadt, Groshauser village, Germany. His wife Anna Catharina? or Maria Catharina (Pleve was unsure which) b. 1727, arrived in Oranienbaum (near St. Petersburg, Russia) on 8.08.1766 by the ship "Mercury" with her six children -- sons Ludwig, Johann Conrad and Philipp Peter, and daughter Catharina Friederica -- two children, Johann Heinrich and Magdalena, died before 1768. They arrived in Kautz/Kauz colony on 20.07.1767, nearly one year later. Son Johann Ludwig b. 1752, moved to Merkel colony before 1775. Son Philipp Peter b. 1760, moved to Balzer colony before 1788. Ludwig evidently started the Knaub line in Merkel, and Philipp Peter evidently started the Knaub line in Balzer. This left Johann Conrad to head the Knaub line in Kautz.
