(There were Skirrows in and about Wray more than 300 years ago. A number of them were among the earliest members of the Society of Friends in that neighbourhood, and four of them - Christopher, Giles, Thomas and Thomas the younger - were arrested on account of their having along with others, ventured to assemble for religious worship in 1660. In the will of Captain Richard Pooley (February, 1683-4) Thomas Skirrow and Christopher Skirrow, yeoman, Wray, are mentioned in connection with the bequest towards the building of Wray free School.)

Thomas Dowbiggin's Burial
In a previous chapter mention was made of the death of Thomas Dowbiggin, yeoman, at High Winder, on August 9, 1695. It may be added that he was buried at Melling Church and is shown by the following entry in the Melling entry:-
"Thomas Dowbiggin de High-Winder Sepult decimo die August 1695 in Eccles."
