Y’S MEN REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR THE BLIND
The Y’s men Club of Virudhunagar in South India was inaugurated on May 6th, 1969 and chartered on June 9th, 1969. It is a unit of the worldwide service Clubs of Y’s Men’s International with its headquarters at Geneva. The Y’s men’s club of Virudhunagar has been supporting its community with its many projects for the past 35 years. The Y’s Men Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind is one of its permanent projects.
Origin of the Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind
In 1993 – 1994, the Y’s Men Club of Virudhunagar was celebrating its Silver Jubilee Year. As a special project to mark the occasion, they decided to establish the Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind and continue it as a permanent project. Ysm. Dr.H. Lysander was one of the charter members of the Club and it had been his long-held dream to set up one such centre. Ysm. Thomas Zachariah, Ysm. T.R.Rajaraman, Ysm. Dr. M. Jeevan, and Ysm. N. Gnanamani worked hard towards the fulfillment of this erstwhile dream. Much of the credit goes to the enthusiasm and personal interest taken by Ysm. Dr.Rajulan Lysander .
Although, India is taking giant strides towards progress in the new millennium, there are still thousands of people who are uneducated, unemployed and live far below the poverty line. In these conditions, it is impossible for the handicapped to get the treatment and support they need in order to lead fruitful lives. Statistics show that there are 7 lakh visually impaired people in Tamil Nadu, of which approximately, 7000 are in the 18 – 30 age group. They lack the education, training and vocational skills to be useful citizens of the society. They live in poverty all their lives. Herein rose the need for a Centre where the visually impaired could be given the support, counseling and training they require. It is in answer to this need that the Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind was founded.
