Virudhunagar Y’s Men’s Eye Bank

The Y’s Men of Virudhunagar, as an extension of their Rehabilitation for the Blind programme, started the Eye Bank in the year 2000. It has been running smoothly. The duties of the Eye Bank are tri-fold.

1. They collect the eye donation pledge forms and maintain a register with all required information. So far, they have collected over 500 pledges for eye donation.
2. They have their own team of doctors that collect the eyes from the donor. As, they lack the necessary storage facilities, they transport the eyes to Aravind Hospital, Madurai where they are used for performing corneal transplantations.
3. They educate the public about Eye Donation using a multi-pronged approach. They give guest lectures at local schools, they air advertisements promoting eye donation on the local TV channels, and they distribute informative pamphlets.
