This site is dedicated
to the late Richard Berry, the man who wrote "Louie Louie."
As teenagers, my friends and I spent a lot of time listening to
this song on a transistor radio. It made you want to dance no
matter where you were. Once, Berry's band, The Kingsmen, played
a high school dance in my area, and I made a cassette tape by
placing a portable recorder near the stage. This was my first
official act of bootlegging.
That song was just
so cool. It was 500 million times cooler than, say, anything by
Bobby Rydell or Frankie Avalon. And that was even before I found
out the song had dirty words. Actually, it turned out not to have
dirty words but we were all convinced it did, which just made
it cooler. We loved that song even though we had no idea whatsoever
what it was about.
Besides all that
it was easy to play on the guitar. Three chords, nothing tricky.
It went "whomp-whomp-whomp,whomp-whomp, whomp-whomp-whomp......"
"Louie Louie" was the first song we learned when we
started a band. We'd flail away on our cheap, untuneable guitars
plugged into our Distort-O-Matic amps, and all the dogs in the
neighborhood would hide and our moms would leave the house on
unnecessary errands. We thought we sounded exactly like the Kingsmen,
though, and the beauty of that song is, we kinda did.
To this day, whenever
that song comes on the radio, I crank up the volume and wail at
my car's windshield. And for that, Richard Berry, wherever you
are: thanks.

THE
RULES
I
do my recording on a Fostex Pro stand-alone deck, so DAO is not
an issue. If you do your burning on a computer, DAO is a must
(no 2-second gaps or internet download "bumps") and
please insert the track breaks. Inform me if the recordings do
not conform to these guidelines as I will most likely select something
else. I am looking for clean recordings without snaps, crackles,
or pops. If a show on your list has flaws, I'll ask you to replace
it (and will gladly do the same for you if one of mine has problem
areas). Satisfaction guaranteed!
As for the quality of blanks ..
I prefer Mitsui but most quality media seems to work well. Try to stay away
from private label and Comp USA brands, however . You know the drill:
Just use the good stuff.
Artwork
is desired if available, and I can supply color inserts for some
of my trades. Unless you can provide high quality prints of the
inserts or scanned (300 dpi) jpeg images saved to a disc, I'd
prefer to just exchange setlists. The availability of setlists,
including all relevant information that you have, is important
as to whether I want a show or not.
Please
don't write on the discs or attach sticky notes to them. I will
identify the discs with sticky notes on the outside of the sleeve.
Discs are sent in a padded envelope via first class mail and are
sent without jewel cases.
Grading
is subjective! Feel free to offer commentary. But remember,
one person's scraps are another's gourmet meal.
At
this point, 2:1 trades are not accepted. I've always got plenty
of regular trades going, and it's healthy to have time to actually
listen to the music.
Obviously,
completing trades in a prompt manner is important. Keep in contact
via e-mail, send the stuff when you say you will, and I'll do
my best to keep my end of the bargain.
NOTES
Artists that I am looking
for especially include: Jesse Malin, Kim Richey, Syd Straw, Radney Foster,
Bill Morrissey, Bap Kennedy, Sheryl Crow, Joe Henry, Everlast,
Jay-Z, DeLaSoul, The Roots, Nelly Furtado, Don Henley, John Hiatt, Dave Alvin,
Todd Snider, Rosanne Cash, Al Kooper/Mike Bloomfield, Del Amitri, Loudon Wainwright,
Dan Bern, The Nields, The Wallflowers, John Gorka, McGarrigle Sisters, Fred
Eaglesmith, The Sawdoctors, Marshall Crenshaw, Lloyd Cole, Warren Zevon, Electric
Flag, Steve Forbert, Paula Cole, and Paul Kelly. I collect a pretty wide variety
of music. There are others, undoubtedly, that I've forgotten to mention, so
don't be shy about sending me your list. If you have anything acoustic or
unplugged or whatever, I'm interested in that as long as the sound quality
is really good. I also like rarities & b-sides compilations, especially
if you can provide the source of the recordings.
So
check out my list, keeping in mind all times are rounded off to
the nearest minute and some CDs have filler material from other
shows. Maybe some day I'll get around to putting up set lists
on this site but don't bet on that happening until I lose part
of this hectic life.
