What to See |
|
The Memorials |
America's memorials are, perhaps only by the best of possible luck, just beautiful. Most of the designs submitted for the memorials were more
elaborate than what was finally executed, but in the long run simplicity won out,
and we are all blessed with the result. For me the Jefferson, Lincoln, Viet Nam
and Roosevelt Memorials are favorites, but the Washington is beautiful too, and
the siting is spectacular.

Shopping |
Areas |
|
Wisconsin & M |
This is Georgetown's major shopping area. There is a nice urban mall at the intersection of Wisconsin and M, and lots of little shops both on
M back towards the Capitol, and on Wisconsin going North.
|
|
Inner Connecticut |
There are lots of good stores in the area north of the White House around the foot of Connecticut Ave. as it comes into town. The
good shopping actually extends a long ways up and down Connecticut, and lots
of it can be reached by Metro.

Metro |
Washington is blessed with a wonderful Metro system reaching not only all over downtown but also far out into the Suburbs. Indeed an easy way to day
trip into DC is to drive to a Suburban Metro Station, and then Metro into town.
One is left with a lingering feeling the the US Taxpayers may have been more than
just passive participants in funding this systems, but it works well and should
be used to save walking around energy for the places that demand it.

But Worth a Mention |
|
The Inn at Little Washington |
Maybe America's highest class Inn and Restaurant. This is in the tiny town of Washington Virginia, about 60 miles to the South
West of Washington DC. Last time I was there dinner was Prix Fixe $120, and
rooms cost $600+. The food is exquisite, if a shade `heavy', and the place is
just beautiful but tending to the `overdone' side. It's `a bit much' but
still a wonderful experience once in a while. The people are very nice and
thoughtful and the food is wonderful but not complex---making it a particular
treat for people who have good, but perhaps not exotic, taste.
