Course Objectives for Calculus II
MATH 222
Dr Rick Butterworth
- Objectives:
- My overall objective in Calculus II is to give the student a firm
understanding of the integral and its importance. The Calculus is
an important tool
in many fields of endeavor, including business, the social sciences,
the sciences, and engineering. I, therefore, try to not only have
the
students understand the how and the why of the Calculus, but also to
be able to apply that knowledge to real situations. It is important
to understand what a derivative is so that one can apply it.
- Specific Objectives:
- A student should be able to:
- solve applications, such as optimziation problems
- use Newton's Method to do approximations
- find the antiderivative of a function using the basic rules
- find the definite integral
- find the area between several curves
- find the sum approximating an integral
- find the derivative of a logarithmic function
- find the derivative of an exponential function
- solve differential equations involving growth and decay
- find the integral of a function using inverse trigonometric functions
- use the disk method and the shell method to find volumes
- solve work, fluid pressure, and fluid force problems
- find the arc length and surface of revolution
- find moments and centers of mass
