MATH 112

Dr Rick Butterworth

  • Objectives:
    • Intermediate Algebra & Trigonometry is a continuation of Introductory Algebra. Therefore, the overall objectives are similar. Algebra is an important subject to comprehend if one wants to have any hope of understanding chemistry, physics, and more advanced mathematics. This course is also a good vehicle to explore logic and logical systems.
  • Specific Objectives:
    • A student should be able to:
      • add, subtract, and multiply polynomials;
      • factor polynomials of the forms: quadratic and quadratic;
      • recognize and perform special factors;
      • add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational expressions;
      • solve rational equations;
      • simplify fractional exponents;
      • convert between fractional exponents and radicals;
      • simplify radicals;
      • add, subtract, multiply and divide radicals;
      • simplify multiplication and division of radicals involving more than one term;
      • rationalize denominators;
      • solve radical equations;
      • solve quadratic equations by factoring , completing the square, the quadratic formula, and graphing;
      • solve incomplete quadratic equations by the square root method;
      • solve equations involving the Pythagorean Theorem;
      • remember the definitions of the trigonometric functions;
      • find the trig functions of acute angles;
      • find the trig functions of special angles;
      • find trig functions using reference angles;
      • use a calculator to find trigonomtric functions; and
      • convert from radians to degrees and vica-versa.
