NADAguides.com Editors Announce Top Vehicles of Summer 2005

Top Truck -- Dodge Ram 1500 Daytona

With a 345hp hemi engine and distinctive styling, Perleberg's top truck choice for 2005 is the Dodge Ram 1500 Daytona. "The styling is reminiscent of the Daytona Charger of the late sixties and the big rear spoiler is one of the same features that helped Dodge dominate NASCAR this year," said Perleberg. "This is a super fast rig -- a perfect blend of toughness, speed and attractive design."

Ram 1500 pickup earns five-star crash test rating

Dodge Ram 1500 has received the highest government frontal crash test rating for the driver and front passenger—the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) five-star rating.*

In this test, vehicles are crashed into a fixed barrier at 35 miles per hour, which NHTSA states is equivalent to a head-on collision between two identical vehicles, each traveling at 35 mph. Instrumented dummies in the driver and front-passenger seats register forces and impacts during the crash.

At Dodge, safety has always been something we take seriously. This five-star rating is an important indication that the Ram 1500 pickup is the kind of vehicle you and the people you care about will feel safe driving.

* Based on NHTSA's 2005 model year rating

Ram 1500 receives the "AAA Auto Guide" award in the truck category

It's the first time AAA has picked a winner in the new truck category. And Ram 1500 takes the honors (As rated in "AAA Auto Guide: 2003 New Cars and Trucks").

AAA says, "In the case of this latest generation of Ram pickups, "new" definitely equals "better". Overall, AAA was most impressed with Ram's potent powertrain choices, solid ride and interior spaciousness and creature comforts.

AAA continues, "If you're shopping for a full-size pickup - whether for work or play - the Dodge Rams have the good looks, performance and creature comforts to hold their own against anything on the market."

Sport Truck Magazine compared the Dodge Ram 1500 with the Chevy Avalanche, GMC Sierra, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma and others, saying "Dodge Ram was the only one that had obvious styling cues taken from sport truck enthusiasts" and that "it's easy to envision this truck lowered and customized."

Lawrence Ulrich of MONEY Magazine wrote, "The roomiest cab, the strongest engine, the biggest brakes, the best ride and handling - no wonder the Ram tops our pickup roster."

Dodge Ram Receives IIHS Highest Rating

March 20, 2002-The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety today announced that the 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 received its highest overall rating in crash performance for pickups tested.* Institute president Brian O'Neill said that the key to good performance in the offset test is good structural design.

"If a vehicle's front-end structure absorbs and manages the crash energy so the occupant compartment remains largely intact, with little or no intrusion into the driver's space, then the dummy's movement is likely to be controlled, and injury measures are likely to be low. In contrast, poor structural design means greater likelihood of poor control of the dummy and high injury measures." O'Neill says.

According to the Institute, an offset crash test into a deformable barrier is especially demanding of vehicle structure, and the 2002 Dodge Ram showed dramatic improvement in nine of 10 measures of intrusion and steering wheel movement.

Special Safety Features of the 2002 Dodge Ram include:

  • Front airbags: passenger airbag equipped with an on/off switch (regular cab models only)
  • Side curtain airbags: for drivers' and front and rear outboard passengers' heads (optional)
  • Adjustable brake and accelerator pedals (optional)
  • Rear-wheel antilock brakes
  • 4-wheel antilock brakes (optional)

The 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup has won Four Wheeler magazine's "Pickup Truck of the Year" award, the publication's editor announced today. During an intensive four-day competition, the Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Quad Cab upstaged rivals in the competition.

"All of us at Dodge are elated that Four Wheeler named the all-new Dodge Ram the winner of their 'Pickup Truck of the Year' competition," said Jim Julow, Vice President Dodge Division Global Brand Center, DaimlerChrysler Corporation. "We built on all the successes that made the previous-generation of our award-winning Ram such a strong force in the market. It's great to see the 2002 Dodge Ram carry on the tradition of being the biggest, best and boldest pickup out there."

"Pickup trucks are the ultimate automotive commodity, so Four Wheeler is especially pleased to acknowledge the excellence of the 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4," said Jon Thompson, Editor, Four Wheeler. "Because we take pickup trucks seriously, we evaluate them for all their intended functions. And while we included pickups from every manufacturer in this test, the Dodge Ram proved to be most adept at showing us all the qualities enthusiasts look for in a four-wheel-drive pickup."

Auburn Hills, Mich. - The 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad CabTM was ranked first in owner satisfaction among all four-door pickup trucks in AutoPacific Inc.'s 2002 Vehicle Satisfaction Score (VSS) study.

"We are gratified by this most recent award as it relates directly to our customer satisfaction with the new Dodge Ram," said Jim Julow, Vice President, Dodge Division Global Brand Center, DaimlerChrysler Corporation. "We feel that the combination of Dodge Ram's bold, 'big rig' styling, versatile body and powertrain options make it a leader in the segment and provide the best package of features for our customers."

The Tustin, California-based AutoPacific conducts the annual VSS study based upon research and feedback from 34,000 new vehicle owners. Owners rank vehicles on overall satisfaction, as well as 43 specific areas related to operation, comfort, safety and purchase/lease experience. Category winners receive AutoPacific's "speedform" award.

The Dodge Ram Quad Cab is unique among four-door pickup trucks, combining the versatility of four real doors without compromising payload or capability. The 2002 Dodge Ram Quad Cab remains essentially the same length as the previous-generation Ram model, making it easy to maneuver and pull in and out of the garage, yet benefitting from an extra three inches of interior room.

The Dodge Ram 1500 provides a standard six-foot-three-inch bed and an optional eight-foot bed. Dodge Ram Quad Cab's rear doors open 85 degrees and the windows lower all the way down and Quad Cab's rear seats feature an optional 60/40 split to accommodate passengers and cargo together.

"The four-door pickup subset is really on a roll," said George Peterson, Founder and President of AutoPacific. "The Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab has just the right formula. All four-doors are front-hinged, and the cabin is usefully lengthened three inches to provide real adult-size accommodation in the rear seat. What's more, the rear seat area is a real treat when folded, providing dedicated in-cabin load space for cargo. Way to go, Dodge!"

Dodge Ram 1500 SLT - An American Icon

What do the Ford F-150 Lariat, the Toyota Tundra Limited, and the Chevrolet Silverado LS all have in common? According to Car and Driver, the only thing is that none even comes close to the standard set by the 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT.

Recently, Car and Driver magazine took all four of these four-wheel-drive trucks to the Arizona desert and put them through some rigorous testing. The verdict? None could hold a candle to the Dodge Ram 1500 SLT.

The results? Car and Driver came up with the following list of what they loved about the Ram.

  • Muscle-shirt sculpting
  • Orthopedic support of the front buckets
  • Ingenious storage seat/console between them
  • Rear doors open independently of fronts

The lists for the competition were much shorter.

They go on to say that, "The Ram shunned the market's standard. Instead, it split the side opening with a hinge pillar down the middle and changed to two conventional doors on each side. Now the extended-cab Ram opens like every four-door sedan."

With all the accolades and praises heaped upon the Ram 1500 none could sum it up better than this simple sentence from Car and Driver.

"Dodge, once again, we think, sets the pickup standard."
