dogo argentino history & breed characteristics
the dogo argentino, aka argentine dogo or argentinian mastiff, is the only purebred dog of argentina. bred as pack hunters of the large game of wild boar, jaguar, & mountain lion, their creation began in the 1920s utilizing 10 breeds (old fighting dog of cordoba, bull terrier, boxer, great dane, pointer, great pyrennes, irish wolfhound, spanish mastiff, olde english bulldogge, & dogue de bordeaux) & was completed & formally recognized in the 1960s. they are consummate clowns with their plaintive chewbacca-like wails when you are out of their sight, classic dogo all over body/tail squiggles of excitement, habit of sprawling out flat on their backs while sleeping, & rambunctious play. these qualities also make them wonderful with children, providing unending tolerance for their "pack" lacking fur. all family, friends, & welcomed guests are equally adored, but they will alert you when their territory is tread upon. the alert will quell once they establish the party who has breached the boundary is friend or family or you indicate all is well. dogos have short white coats, black noses (they start pink & fill in with spots later), skin spots, & occasional black fur markings. adults are 80-120#s & 23.5-27.5". ears may be cropped (preferred for show) or natural & should be BAER (brain auditory evoked response) hearing tested due to piebald pattern deafness; tails are natural.
