Exotic Hybrid Cacti

One of the unique offerings of the Chihuahuan Desert is found in a remote location where several species of native cacti have naturally hybridized, resulting in another example of nature's gaudy paint pot. These cacti exhibit a wide spectrum of color and form,

These cacti are found only in this remote location of the Chihuahuan Desert, and are often discussed among cactus lovers. This year, I was able to make the trek to their habitat to enjoy the bloom.

This cactus, Echinocereus dasyacanthus, is believed to be one of the "parents" of the hybrids.

Another potential parent is Echinocereus cloranthus.

Yet another possible parent is Echinocereus coccineus

After driving some challenging, washed out dirt roads, this is one of the locations the hybrids call "home."

After walking around the desert for a brief time, the first hybrid is found at the base of an agave.

Here is a cute pink beauty!

Not to be outdone, another hybrid struts its electric colors!

Here is another shade of pink.

This is a "photo opportunity" if there ever was one!

Not to be outdone, this beautiful yellow and peach bloom eagerly poses for the camera!

Not to be done, another cactus displays its blooms!

This pink beauty has a white and yellow center.

This hybrid has reddish pink blooms with yellow/green centers.

But, wait..... Let's not forget the orange, yellow, and pink!

These agave blooms are showing off, performing various "contortionist" moves!.

Another cute set of pink, yellow, and light green blooms awaits!

Here is a yellow, green, and brick red bloom.

Here is a pale yellow, almost white, bloom.

Here is a very happy pink and yellow bloomer!

But, wait...there's more---a brilliant magenta bloom awaits!

Here is the landscape photographer's version!

Another cute pink bloom.

A native wildflower found on the way home.

More wildflowers!

The last wildflower of the trip wasn't going to be outdone either!

As can be seen in the photos, the hybrids have a myriad of bloom colors and stems, depending on the parent cacti involved in the hybrid. The hybrids have large colorful blooms.

One day just didn't do this location justice. Next year, I'll have to plan a longer trip!
