A stereotypical 1950’s television housewife

First let's answer the question "What is a stereotypical 1950’s television housewife?"

Have you ever watched The Donna Reed Show, Leave it to Beaver, Our Miss Brooks, I Love Lucy, and the other family style television shows in the 1950's.  I am sure most of you have.  The mother / housewife was often pictured wearing a shirtwaist dress with petticoats, high heels, jewelry, and make-up even while cleaning her home.

Now we all know that what we saw on television was not the way it really was but for me it is the life I have chosen to live.  Some women actually did live close to the television style but none lived their life exactly like the housewife we all saw on television.  Why?  To put it simply dressing that way to do all the housework and taking care of the family was too impractical.

I however have chosen to live this lifestyle just to prove it could be done and experience the life of what a stereotypical 1950’s television housewife would have experienced if she was for real.  Not to mention the fact that I love the swing style skirts that were held out with massive petticoats.

As a part of this lifestyle I have to get use to doing things differently.  Some of those things are: wearing a hat or scarf and gloves whenever I go out, carrying a hankie when out, constantly refreshing of my lipstick to keep it looking proper, doing housework in high heels, full make-up, and jewelry including cleaning the toilets and tubs, managing my full skirt dresses so they do knock over things, sitting down while carrying something and not having a free hand to spread my dress and petticoats underneath me, getting my petticoats out of the way so I can get into the car or use the restroom and then re-arranging my petticoats afterwards, going down stairs without being able to see the next step (view blocked by petticoats.), and having to starch and iron my dresses and petticoats before wearing them.  Sleeping in curlers every night and then sitting under a hair dryer every morning and then styling my hair into a pleasing 1950's style.

Well that is about it please feel free to e-mail me with suggestions on how to be a better stereotypical 50’s television housewife or with questions of any type.  I will answer truthfully and the best I can.

Some have asked to see a day in my life so click here to find out.

Now that you have read a little about me below are some pictures of me followed by some links that relate to the 50’s.  Most of my dresses were made by my wife who is supporting me in this adventure.  My petticoats came from bridal shops and my cat-eye glasses in some of the pictures came from E-Bay. I then had my prescription placed in the frames.

Remember if you want your wife or girl friend to accept and help you with things you wish to do you have to give something back that they want. What is in it for you is the fun.  You both need to answer the question What is in it for her?  If both can answer that then she will more likely to want to help you.  For me and my wife the answer was me relieving her from her housework and some of the cooking. My wife always wanted someone to clean her house and now she has me.  Maybe your significant other will accept and help a different you.
