VEXED wants the 4 Rs In my requirements of the 4Rs ( see below) I think we got 1 and 4, and a possibly a partial on 3.
1. Replace - Fix by replacing the ETM on all cars
showing symptoms without hassle. Discussion on the 4Rs.1. REPLACE: By William Shapiro's CONFIDENTIAL letter Volvo Cars of North America is admitting there is a problem and giving instructions to dealers on how to handle the failures. This is the first information, that we know of, since the misleading throttle cleaning Technical Service Bulletin (TSB), that Volvo has sent to the dealers. They do say that it might be a cleaning, software upgrade or replacement. I am pleased with this event, but, and there is always a but, Volvo owners that are experiencing driveability problems, without a on board diagnostic code being set, are having difficulty getting a warranty repair. 4. REIMBURSE: All previous 'out of pocket expenses to date' will be reimbursed whether the car was serviced by a dealer or independent garage. As far as I have heard this does not include incidental expenses such as towing, rental and charges incurred such as spark plugs, injectors, air mass meters and similar while 'shot gunning' a fix?
3. RECALL: The letter says not to
order replacements at this time. By calling this a warranty
they will not have 200,000 cars waiting for ETMs all at the
same time. I would hope, (and this is just my thought) that
Volvo will take this time to redesign the part so that in a
year or so the replacement parts will be a robust 'life of
the car' replacement. Then, after they get the cars
experiencing the problem, I would again hope they would
replace all the remaining ETMs. From studying the design I
believe that all will fail, and those having the 8644347
part will fail more than once. The extended warranty is
NOT a recall. A recall is for all cars with a particular
problem, the warranty only comes into play when a part
fails. |
