Doobie's friends and family agree that he isn't "too bad" and encouraged him to try out for American Idol, thinking he could surely make it on one of those early episodes. He's way too old, of course, but one should be careful about the behavior one encourages, shouldn't one? Since then he has performed in every coffee house, speak easy, and stairwell he could find. Here is what the critics say:
"When you take pure musical talent and divide by the cost of admission, Wilson is infinitely better than Eric Clapton."
Ms. Penny Pincher, Cost Effective Entertainment Weekly
"A curious mix of the sacred and profane, gentle love ballads and dirty, low-down blues. Sure to offend everyone."
Rev. Thumper McGee, Bible Belt Broadcasters Association
"The only entertainer who will throw in a lecture on thermodynamics between sets. Wilson's music is a classic demonstration of the second law."
Dr. N. Tropie, Chair, Dept. of High Energy Physics, The Julliard School
"Yet another baby boomer revival. We know where Wilson is now, but where was he then?!"
Mr. Flasch Baack, Host of VH1's "Where Are They Now?"

Doobie and the Yard Dogs Open the Alabama Blues Project Benefit Concert
"An Evening of Art and Blues"
Doobie was joined by Adam Guthrie on lead guitar, Chris Johnson on bass, Mike Rives on keyboards, and Dwayne Pruitt on drums for the "Evening of Art and Blues" benefit concert for the Alabama Blues Project. Headlining the event were Willie King and the Liberators and legendary blues drummer Sam Lay. A host of other talented blues musicians entertained the large crowd at Tuscaloosa's L&N Train Station on Friday, August 24, 2007 and area artists (including Lorrie "Big Mama Wilson" Lane) donated work for the fundraising auction. I am immensely grateful to the Yard Dogs for volunteering their time and talents and for their friendship and support. Check out our practice session on Sunday before the event. This was filmed, edited, and posted by my 10 year old, Charles. Notice that he is a true musician, concentrating his filming on our hands!
Have you always wondered what goes through the mind of a middle aged college professor with rock star fantasies? Well, of course not. But now that you've read this, are you a little curious. Really?! Well, then check out my music blog. My latest entry is a list of my top 10 musical experiences this past year. It was such a cool year, the Bluebird Cafe' performance didn't even make the list!
Doobie is quite aware that his age is almost twice the AI limit. My big chance came this spring with AI's songwriting contest. The judge's top 20 songs would be put to a public vote with the winning song performed in the final show. Lorrie and I went through my catalog of original songs, visualizing something for Melinda Doolittle to sing. We came up with "Morning Sun", something I wrote 30+ years ago. My recording is posted on mp3.com for free. I can't believe with over 10,000 songs entered that they didn't pick mine (just kidding). Anyone want to make it a hit?
Doobie and the Yard Dogs Rocked the Mellow Mushroom
Doobie and the Yard Dog's rocked the upstairs patio at the Mellow Mushroom on Wednesday, May 2, from 8-10. Joining him were Tuscaloosa's Grey on drums and Birmingham's Adam Guthrie on bass/guitar. They performed original songs, traditional blues, and covers of his favorite artists, including Keb Mo, Guy Davis, James Taylor, the Beatles. They played to an SRO crowd and received a "cell phone" ovation.
Rick Carter Hosts the Very Last Guitar Pull
All good things eventually come to an end. After more than 10 years of hosting the Guitar Pull at the Oasis Bar, Rick Carter is moving on to new projects. Rick called the evening "One More Time" and we enjoyed a huge party with over 20 musical acts. I wrote a song by that name and performed it with help from Adam Guthrie on lead guitar and the two Johns with backup harmonies. Check out this special web page with the free .mp3 recording and pictures!
Doobie Tops the Charts at MP3.com
Over the 2006 holiday season, Doobie's "Merry Christmas" was an editor's top pick and the downloads were smokin'! For several days, the song topped the charts (for free music downloads) and remained in the top 10 for weeks. It is among the top 10 all-time free downloads and is the #1 free download of all-time in the blues genre with over 25,000 downloads as of 1/4/07. Lil' Doobie's song "There Is A Place" is the #2 all-time blues genre download with over 1,000.
Lil' Doobie Writes His First Song
As part of an arts contest, 9 year old Lil' Doobie wrote the lyrics, melody, and chord arrangement for this song. Doobie Senior recorded the song late one night in (what he considers) a contemporary style. The song is about his favorite place, the woods behind our house. Last summer the bulldozers came and pushed down all the trees for a new phase to the subdivision. Email Lil' Doobie to let him know you like the song. It won first place in the Tuscaloosa PTA's 2006-2007 Reflections Program for musical composition.
There is a place
Beyond the street
Beyond the concrete
My favorite place
That's where you'll find me
There in the woods
Just think how sad
That people would cut down trees
In my favorite place
Just listen to
The breeze blowing through the trees
And remember this is the forest
That the Lord has made (x4)
Taylor Hicks opens for Doobie?!

Technically true! America's #1 performer slipped in front of me at the June 19th, 2006 "Guitar Pull" at the Oasis in Birmingham. I followed Taylor at 1:30 a.m. after he rocked the bar for 90 minutes. Talk about a 'tough act to follow'! See the full story here.
