9 Gourdswatch (Yondalla) - gourds and squashes (pumpkins!) are carved into terrifying or comic faces to ward off the evil sprits which come in with the winter.  Costumes are worn, so that the spirits will not know who to haunt.   The insides of the gourds are, of course, cooked and eaten as pies, stews, etc.

23 Winter’s Eve (Ell) Celebration of the longest night of the year.  Nachtwatten (Yondalla) - The halfling adults stay awake all night to ensure that the longest night of the year comes to an end.  The children awake in the morning to greet the return of the sun with songs.  Presents are exchanged and exotic fruits and huge meals are consumed (to prepare for the lean winter ahead).
