My Dory Background

My first introduction to dories was in the spring of 1977. My father purchased a 22' Oregon Dory, the "Pisces" in Newport, Oregon for commercial salmon trolling. He renamed it "Carolyn Kay" in honor of my mother and sister. I was 14 years old at the time. We fished our dory from 1977 to 1991 most every summer off the Oregon coast for chinook and coho salmon. While we never launched our boat off the surf at Pacific City, we did get into some wild water offshore, and while crossing the bars of Newport, Florence and Winchester Bay.

Increased restrictions, the elimination of the coho fishery and other interests led to the end of an incredible experience. The "Carolyn Kay" now resides in Pacific City under a new name, "Sand Dollar."
