The “Learned Family” Dory History Quilt

The “Learned Family” Dory history quilt was created by the women of the Learned, Dinkel, Douglass and Ellerbroek families with the original plan by Terry Learned (Sandgerdi).   The center panel is the beach at Pacific City with the Haystack Rock and Cape Kiwanda in the background.  At the top is an original poem by Annie Learned; to the left is the “Shifless Skonk” and to the right, “The Sangerdi”.  To the left and right of center are the “Georgi Ann” and the “Too Late”.  At bottom left is the “Lazy Farmer.  Bottom right is the Little Skipper and in the center bottom is a square for the “Alley Cat” – Our beloved grandmother’s CB handle.  Every morning, Victor Learned (Little Skipper) would call his “Alley Cat” once he reached the rock to let her know he was safe and all was well.

Each small light brown square has a variation of a pattern involving coffee – in remembrance of those mornings spent at the “Coffee Shop” when the weather was too bad to brave the surf. To complete the quilt were dark brown accent squares and smaller squares with green dory boats appliquéd in the center.  In these “dory boat” squares are written the names of the majority of the boats in the Pacific City Dory fleet.

We created this quilt for our Grandparents, Victor and Alice Learned as a Christmas gift, 1997.  It became even more precious to our family after our beloved Little Skipper went home to be with the Lord in August of 1998.

Learned Boat Shop of Pacific City, OR

This is a boat in progress; actually almost completed...built for a client in the McMinnville, OR area, the photo doesn't really do it justice.  It IS a beautiful craft; another quality dory by the Learned Boat Shop of Pacific City, OR.

If anyone is interested in the Learned Dory building tradition, a recent article in the prestigious “Wooden Boat” magazine complete with pictures tells the story very well.  This great story by Charles Summers is on page 74 of the March/April 2002 issue.  The photos are awesome, including shots of the Predator, several other boats and the Learned family at work in their shop.  Check it out!
