Doug Sheldon
Master of GIS Program

Education:transcripts
Four years at Clarion, and then two more at Penn State got me a BS in Geography and an unfinished thesis. Ten years later I'm at it again, this time through the Penn State World Campus.

Career:
In my first ten years working, I managed to accumulate seven previous employers. Today I work within the GIS Division of the Information Services Department at Spotsylvania County, Virginia. So far in my career, I have worked mostly as a programmer. I've written MapObjects, Avenue, MapBasic, VB and Java code. In addition, in my current job I administer the SQL Server ArcSDE database and ArcIMS websites. My main interests are in distributed/web GIS programming, but I enjoyed brushing up on my desktop ArcGIS skills during the first year of this program.

With all my job-hopping, I've gotten pretty good at the GIS job search. If you're looking, I would recommend the Job Listing Sites for GIS at the GIS Lounge. They seem to have a pretty comprehensive list. My favorite GIS job website is GIS Jobs Clearinghouse. Personally I'm hoping to give these links a rest and stay put at one job for a while.

Lifestyle:
I live in Stafford, Virginia with my wife Kim who works for the Stafford County GIS Office and also runs Woven In Tyme, a medieval and renaissance tapestry import business. We have a one-year-old son.
