Cannon Beach Cannon Beach is one of Oregon’s most picturesque destinations. It has been ranked number seven of the "World's Best Beaches" by the Travel Channel. It has a truly spectacular setting between the lush rain forests hills and the beautiful ocean. Nine miles of wide beach, all white powder sand, make it perfect for long scenic strolls and just about any other kind of ocean shore activity.
The world-famous Haystack Rock is Cannon Beach’s icon. This 237-feet tall rock is one of world’s largest coastal monolith; it towers majestically over the center of the beach and can be seen from afar. At low tide you can reach the Haystack Rock by land and discover fascinating tide pools that are home to a variety of intertidal animals, including starfish, sea anemone, and crabs. The rock is also a refuge for many sea birds, such as terns and puffins.
Just to the north of Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park, which is an absolute must for any visitor to see. After winding through a scenic paved road among giant Sitka spruce up the massive headland you suddenly emerge upon stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. From Ecola State Park, you can observe unparalleled panoramic views of Cannon Beach, Haystack Rock, majestic surfing waves, unique rock formations, emerald wooded hills, and seagulls and sea lions galore. The Park has several picnic tables where you can enjoy the most breathtaking picnic of your life. Ecola State Park encompasses several long walking trails and beaches, such as Indian Beach. This beach is beautiful but more secluded; it is a favorite place for surfers and has been featured in the famous Patrick Swayze film “Point Break”. From Indian Beach you can also see Tillamook Rock Lighthouse – an iconic lighthouse located on a steep rock in the middle of the ocean.
A few miles south of Cannon Beach is Oswald West State Park, which offers year-round recreation opportunities. The park encompasses almost 2,500 acres, with magnificent views of such sights as Cape Falcon, Neahkanie Mountain, Arch Cape, and Smuggler’s Cove.
Cannon Beach is famous for its artistic spirit as much as for its scenic beauty. Since the early days, Cannon Beach has attracted artists, and today its artistry is distinctively seen in its architecture, plentiful flowers and meticulous gardens; unique public sculptures, and an acclaimed playhouse that offers year-round live entertainment. Cannon Beach has a variety of art galleries that feature local artists’ work at a wide range of prices. The beautiful downtown is also lined with specialty shops, restaurants, and cafes.
Located only 80 minutes from Portland, Cannon Beach is a popular destination for weekend trips and vacations. The town’s unparallel natural beauty, artistic spirit, and relaxed easy going atmosphere make it a popular place for vacation homes.
