Benjamin Fickett was one of those mentioned as a grantee in the conditional grant of Township No 5 (what is now Harrington & Milbridge) on 27 Jan 1766 [Acts and Resolves, Public and Private, of the Massachusetts Bay, Vol 17 1761-1764, pg 474-479]. Although Benjamin did not settle in Township No 5, his grant may be what caused his sons to move there at an early date.

Benjamin's marriage intention to Sarah Sawyer is in the Falmouth ME records [NEHGS XVI:317]. There is no conclusive proof as to the identity of his wife, Sarah, and some speculation that the marriage intention date of 1760 is an error as children appear to have been born prior to that date.

His wife may have been Sarah ⁵ Sawyer, b 30 Nov 1734, d/o Jonathan Sawyer and Sarah Sawyer. They also had a daughter, Deborah Sawyer, b 6 Nov 1749, who married another Benjamin Fickett.

His wife may also have been Sarah Sawyer, d/o Isaac and Sarah (Brackett) Sawyer [Thomas Bentum Genealogy].

The Sawyer Genealogy [Sawyer Families of New England, Eleanor Grace Sawyer, Penobscot Press, 1995] does not give a Sarah Sawyer, d/o Jonathan Sawyer and Sarah Sawyer, who married Benjamin Fickett but does give a Deborah Sawyer, d/o Jonathan Sawyer and Sarah Sawyer who m 10 Apr 1770 Benjamin Fickett, s/o this Benjamin's brother, John and Isabel (Dyer) Fickett.

Benjamin moved from Cape Elizabeth ME to Gorham ME after 1799. When his son, Moses, moved to Milbridge, he went there to live with him, by then very old and blind.

The Thomas Bentum Genealogy gives his birth date as 26 Aug 1737.

2    DANIEL ⁵ FICKETT [# 1431] s/o BENJAMIN ⁴ FICKETT and SARAH ⁵ SAWYER was born at ? ; died at Harrington ME bef 1786; married at ? Hannah Fickett(mn) d/o ? and ?;

There is a question as to Daniel's parents. Several researchers have suggested that he was s/o Thomas Fickett and Mary Moulton (a brother to Benjamin Fickett rather than a s/o Benjamin Fickett). Daniel's Revolutionary War records seem to indicate that he was age 27 in 1781 (born abt 1754). If Daniel was born in 1754, it is not likely that he was a s/o Benjamin Fickett & Sarah Sawyer as they were not married until 1760. Similarly, 1754 would seem to make Thomas Fickett & Mary Moulton unlikely parents as they were probably too old (they had children born as early as 1722-1726).

Daniel was probably the first of the Fickett line to settle in western Washington County ME. This is evidenced by his Revolutionary war record and real estate records.

Daniel owned a lot at Narraguagus (that part now Milbridge) to the east of Joseph Wallace's lot on 8 May 1779 [LCD 14:165]. Daniel was not directly involved in this transaction but is mentioned as living to the east of the lot being sold.

Daniel's Revolutionary war record from "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution":

Private; service between Aug - and Oct -, 1777, 7 days; pay roll of men who served at Machias but whose wages, etc, were not made up in any previous roll; also, Capt John Hall's co, Col Benjamin Foster's (Lincoln Co) regt; service from Aug 7, 1779, to Sept 7, 1779, 1 mo; company marched on an expedition to Majorbagaduce by order of Gen Lovel; roll certified at Boston; also, Capt Henry Dyer's co of rangers; enlisted March 18, 1780; discharged May 1, 1780; service, 1 mo 13 days; company raised for defence of Eastern country by order of Col John Allan, commanding officer at Machias and Superintendent of Eastern Indian department.

Private, Capt Daniel Sullivan's co, Col Benjamin Forster's (6th Lincoln Co) regt; enlisted Oct 27, 1780; discharged Nov 7, 1780; service, 12 days; company ordered out by Col John Allan to protect the inhabitants of Frenchman's Bay. [also see BHM pg 1291-1292]

The above indicates that Daniel Fickett was a settler at or near Narraguagus (that part now Milbridge) before 1777.

Daniel's estate was administered 23 Feb 1786 [WCPR 1:21] and included a lot in Cherryfield valued at 30 pounds. As the records demonstrate, Daniel certainly left a widow named Hannah. A number of researchers have stated that Hannah, widow of Daniel Fickett, married 2nd, as his 2nd wife, Samuel Wakefield. However, there are two possible problems. Milliken's "Narraguagus Valley" states that Samuel Wakefield's 2nd wife was widow Hannah Small. The other problem is the ages of Samuel & Hannah Wakefield's children.

If we believe census records and gravestones, at least two of Samuel Wakefield's children were born before Hannah, widow of Daniel Fickett, became a widow [James Wakefield, age 66 in the 1850 census and age 68 at death on 23 Apr 1852; Miriam Wakefield, age 64 in the 1850 census and age 77 at death on 16 Apr 1863]. Samuel Wakefield's 1st wife died about 1777. If we believe WCPR 2:183, then Samuel and Hannah's children at the time of Samuel's death (bef Sep 1793) were 1, 3, 5 and 7. These ages better fit the suggestion that their mother was Hannah, widow of Daniel Fickett (except for the 7 year old).

A more thorough examination of the settlement of Daniel Fickett's estate might resolve the problem. These records would be WCPR 1:21, 1:27, 1:92, 1:196 and 1:197.

Moses must have moved from Gorham ME to Harrington ME (that part currently Milbridge) abt 1817 when he bought 100 acres in Milbridge from Alexander Nickels of Steuben.

He apparently lived on Back Bay Rd, between Rte 1A & Rim Rd. He deeded his lot to his sons Rufus & Alvin in 1830 (they deeded to each other in 1848, Alvin getting the north part and Rufus the south part).

Note: Moses and Sarah appear to have been much too old to have had their 10th child, Eliza A Fickett. No child Eliza's age is with Moses in 1840.

Zebulon came to Harrington ME in 1786 or 1789 from Falmouth ME. In 1794 Zebulon Fickett, settler, received a grant of lot #34, 100 acres, for 3 pounds. This lot was near the current boundary line of Harrington and Milbridge ME.

The Thomas Bentum genealogy says that he died 8 Apr 1854 (probably because that is the date that Mary's pension began) and gives his 1st marriage as 6 Aug 1790. Zebulon's 2nd m date is from Joseph Adam's docket book.

The birth dates of several of Zebulon's children appear incorrect as Zebulon was not yet married and he would seem to have been too young. Zebulon's children can't yet be reconciled to census data.

Probate records in 1860 name Azro and Mary Adeline (minor children over the age 14) and Eliza Jane, Albion F and Nelly (minor children), heirs of Alvin Fickett, late of Milbridge [WCPRl 21:477].

Alvin built his house on Back Bay Rd in Milbridge, across from his brother Rufus, in 1835.

Rufus's birth date based on his age at death is 31 Aug 1811.

Rufus was a farmer and ship carpenter at Milbridge ME.

Ezekeiel was born at Scarboro ME or vicinity. He moved to Harrington ME with his father when a young boy.

He was probably b 1780-84 even though his gs suggests 1778.

The children of Ezekiel Fickett are very speculative. The only two certain children are Sarah and Mary [death records]. Census records suggest more daughters.

Wm D & wife Dorcas F Fickett transferred property at Columbia ME 6 Apr 1868 to John Carroll. It must be about this time that William moved to CA.
