Ebenezer Cole is one of those listed as a grantee in the conditional grant of Township No 5 (what is now Harrington & Milbridge) on 27 Jan 1764 [Acts and Resolves, Public and Private, of the Massachusetts Bay, Vol 17 1761-1764, pg 474-479]. He moved to No 5 about 1768-1770. In 1794 he received lot #38 and lot #44 in Harrington. These were located on the east side of the Harrington river on what is now called the Marshville Road. In 1802 he sold both of these lots to his son John Cole.

Ebenezer's 1st 6 children were either baptized or recorded in North Yarmouth ME (1758-1768). His next 4 children were probably born in Harrington. His last child, Susanna, was baptized at North Yarmouth in 1786.

Ebenezer was appointed guardian of his daughter, Elizabeth (Cole) Strout's, 4 minor children in 1796.

In 1794, Ebenezer Cole Jr received lot # 46 in Harrington. This lot was on the east side of the Harrington river, just south of Cornelius Cole's lot #47, his brother, which was just south of Ebenezer Cole's lot #38, their father.

Ebenezer was listed in the Harrington 1790 census, living alone.

Harrington census records for 1800 and 1810 suggest that Ebenezer's wife (?) was much older than Mary Nash would have been (at least age 45 in 1800). No explanation has yet been found for this. These same census records suggest that Ebenezer had, at most, two children who lived beyond their youth, an unknown female born about 1795-1800 and Ebenezer, born about 1810.

In 1794, Cornelius Cole received lot # 47 in Harrington ME. This lot was on the east side of the Harrington river, just south of his father's lot # 38 and just north of his brother's lot # 46.

Cornelius Cole's marriage to "Polly" Colbeth is given in the Machias ME marriage records of James Avery, Esq., but only with a date of 1797. This record indicates that both were of Buck's Harbor at the time. Machias ME marriage records [BHM pg 1365] gives the marriage of "Cornelius Cole and Polly Coolbroth" as 25 Apr 1797 (probably a marriage intention).

Reuben lived at Harrington from 1790-1840 and Cherryfield from 1850-60. He was a veteran of the War of 1812. His pension records mention his wife, Abigail Davis, their marriage date, 21 Oct 1848 at Cherryfield ME, Reuben's death date, 15 Aug 1861, and Abigail's death date, abt 1882 [WC 13076].

EPRF, pg 532 & 534, calls her Betsy T Cole, d/o Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Hall) Cole. However, Ebenezer's daughter, Elizabeth, was about 8 years older than this Elizabeth. Also, Elizabeth, d/o Ebenezer, married Benjamin Strout abt 1786 and Ebenezer Jordan abt 1796. Since Ebenezer Jordan remarried abt 1800/01, it is possible that his wife, Elizabeth, divorced him and is the same Elizabeth that married the Tabbutt brothers (except for the age discrepancy).

Elizabeth was called Betsy Tabbutt of Harrington in marriage intentions filed at Columbia ME 24 Aug 1805. She was called Elizabeth in the 1850 census.

No other Coles in the Harrington area, besides Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Hall) Cole, were of the correct age to be Elizabeth's parents.

Elmira had one known child, Walter V Nash b Jul 1867. She does not appear in the 1870 census and Reuben remarried by then.

A clue to Emira's identity is that she and her husband were living with the Amos Cole family at Harrington ME in 1860. Quite possibly, she was a sister to Amos Cole, and the unidentified daughter of Peter and Eliza (Small) Cole b abt 1827 and living with them in 1830 and 1840.
