The John Hall Family
of Addison ME
1 JOHN 5 HALL [# 35] s/o HATEVIL 4 HALL( HATEVIL 3, JOHN 2, JOHN 1) and SARAH 3 FURBUSH was born at Dover NH 19 Jun 1744; died at Addison ME 18 Jun 1804; married at ? abt 1763 Grace 5 Sprague, d/o Terah Sprague and Love Hooper;
John's ancestors are given in "History of Dover, New Hampshire", by John Scales, 1923, republished by Heritage Books, 1989, pg 375-390.
When he was about age 9 (abt 1753), John moved with his family to Falmouth ME. Shortly after his marriage to Grace Sprague, John moved from Falmouth ME to Pleasant River (now Addison ME) where he signed a petition in 1770.
On 25 Oct 1771, John Hall of Pleasant River purchased land on the east side of Pleasant River in township No 6 (now Addison) from Daniel Rolfe of Cherryfield ME [LCD, Vol 9, Folio 73]. He was granted this land as a settler's lot (lots 6 & 7) by a resolve of the General Court 21 Jun 1793. John deeded this land (about 300 acres) to his son, William Sprague Hall 4 Feb 1804 [WCD 3:433].
On 22 Jul 1775, he was one of eight signers of a petition to the Massachusetts Bay General Assembly.
He was listed as an inhabitant of Pleasant River on 17 Apr 1778, with eight in his family, in a list of inhabitants compiled by another early settler, Seth Norton.
Several references list John as one of the forty settlers in and around Machias ME that captured the British ship, Margaretta, in Machias harbor on Monday, 12 Jun 1775, only weeks after the battle at Lexington MA 19 Apr 1775. He was a Captain in the militia during the Revolution as indicated by the following service records [Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution 7:91]:
"Captain, 8th co., 6th Lincoln Co. regt. of Mass. militia; list of officers commissioned July 11, 1776; also, Captain, in command of a detachment drafted from militia for service at Machias; engaged June 24, 1777; discharged June 30, 1777; service, 6 days, also, Captain, in command of a detachment, Col. Benjamin Foster's (Lincoln Co.) regt.; entered service Sept. 15, 1777; discharged Oct 6, 1777; service, 21 days; detachment there did duty when British ships lay in the harbor; roll dated Pleasant river; also, Captain of a company in Col. Foster's (Lincoln Co.) regt.; roll made up for service for 1 mo. and mileage out and home, and endorsed 'service at Penobscot'; mileage (166 miles) allowed said Hall; company marched on expedition to Majorbagaduce Aug. 7, 1779, by order of Gen. Lovel."
Due to his infirmities, John relinquished rights of administration of his son's estate (John Hall Jr) to his other son, Hatevil Hall 12 Nov1802 [WCPR, 3:80].
His relations (Hatevil Hall, Kinsman Corthell, William Haycock and Josiah Moore) tried to declare him an idiot and incapable of caring for himself 20 Feb 1804 [Machias Probate Records, 3:190]. Addison selectmen (Joseph Merritt, Jesse Plummer and Holmes Nash) found him to be capable of caring for himself 12 Jun 1804 [WCPR, 3:191].
John's wife, Grace, apparently lived until after 1810 as a Grace Hall is listed in the 1810 census for Addison [EPRF says that Grace died after 1830].

2 JOHN 6 HALL [# 34] s/o JOHN 5 HALL and GRACE 5 SPRAGUE was born at Falmouth ME abt 1764; died at ? abt 1802; married at ? abt 1783 Mary 4 Nash, d/o Samuel Nash and Keziah Orcutt;
John was a mariner who had died by 12 Nov 1802 when his father relinquished rights of administering the estate of his son, John, to his other son, Hatevil [WCPR, 3:80]. The court granted administration to Hatevil of Plantation No, 20 (22) on 22 Nov 1802 [WCPR, 3:81]. John's son, John, being a minor over the age of fourteen, resident of Columbia, petitioned the court to appoint William Patten of Columbia as his guardian on 8 Jun 1803 [WCPR, 3:135].
John's estate was inventoried by Elias Norton, Richard Merritt and Abraham Norton, all of Addison, and submitted to the probate court on 8 Jun 1803. The estate consisted of:
Real Estate $487.50 98 1/2 acres of upland ? acres of dyke marsh 10 acres of salt marsh
Personal Estate $36.84 1 note of hand signed Kinsman Corthell dated 13 Dec 1797 1 note of hand signed Wm Patten dated 8 Nov 1801 vest, britches, chest of drawers
Additionally, John Allen of Martha's Vineyard sent a long list of personal items belonging to John including $30.61 via Capt. John Cottle [WCPR, 3:139]. This suggests that John perished while at sea, perhaps in the employ of John Allen or Capt. John Cottle and perhaps near Martha's Vineyard. This has not yet been researched.
John's father-in-law, Samuel Nash, was a private in a company of revolutionary soldiers led by John's father, Capt. John Hall. John's wife, Mary Nash, is not mentioned in any of the probate records following John's death. It is therefore assumed that Mary had died by then. Neither John or Mary are mentioned in the census records for 1790 or 1800. John was listed in the Addison ME 1798 tax list as owning 50 acres.

3 HATEVIL 6 HALL [# 937] s/o JOHN 5 HALL and GRACE 5 SPRAGUE was born at Addison ME abt 1772; died at Jonesboro ME 18 May 1829 [gs]; married (1) at ? bef 1795 Rebecca Morton d/o ? and ?; married (2) at ? Sarah Knowles 5 Steele, d/o Reuben Steele and Amy "Emma" Knowles; Hatevil is buried at Porter Whitney Cemetery, Jonesboro ME
Hatevil's father deeded a 60 acre lot (part of the original 300 acre homestead?) on Pleasant River to Hatevil [WCD 1:408-409]. It was probably this lot that Hatevil sold in 1803 to William Carlisle [WCD 4:84].
Hatevil Hall, of #22 (Jonesport ME), received a lot on the north side of Chandler's River Oct 1795 [WCD 2:256]. This would indicate that he had moved there from Addison by that date. On 9 Oct 1798, Hatevil of Chandler River bought land from Thomas Ruggles & Joseph Patten.
In 1825, Hatevil had a son, Daniel, by Sarah Knowles Steele of Jonesport. They were not married.

William served in the War of 1812.
He lived in Jonesboro ME most of his life but may have been in St Stephen NB for a short time [EJF, pg 47].
William's first marriage may have been in St Stephen but the marriage is not given by Early Jonesport Families nor is the child of this marriage, William Hall. This child and marriage may not be correct!
On 4 Feb 1804, William's father, John Hall, deeded his original 300 acre homestead lot in Addison to William, then of Addison [WCD 3:433]. William deeded one-half of this land to his brother, Simeon Hall, 27 Apr 1810 [WCD 6:344] and the other half to another brother, Joel Hall, 28 Jun 1815 [WCD 8:179]. Each brother received their lots shortly after becoming of age 21.

7 JOHN 7 HALL [# 33] s/o JOHN 6 HALL and MARY 4 NASH was born at Addison ME 10 May 1784; died at Harrington ME 15 Nov 1836 [WCPR]; married (1) at ? abt 1805 Elizabeth 5 Colson, d/o Samuel Colson and Susanna Willey; married (2) at Cherryfield ME 23 Jul 1820 [marriage int filed at Harrington ME 5 Apr 1820] Dorcas Fernald 7 Willey, d/o Ichabod Willey and Sally Fernald; married (3) at ? 5 Nov 1832 [marriage int filed at Harrington ME 15 Nov 1832] Mary Nash "Polly" 7 Libby, d/o Job Libby and Rebecca Mitchell;
John's father died when John was about age 18. A minor over 14, he petitioned the court to appoint William Patten of Columbia as his guardian on 8 Jun 1803 [WCPR, 3:135].
John was one of the early settlers of the Marshville section of Harrington (there by 1810). He lived at Hardwood Point on the east side of the Harrington river.
John's second marriage to Dorcas Fernald Willey is given in the docket book of Joseph Adams of Cherryfield ME. Marriage intentions were filed there on both 13 Nov 1819 and 29 Jan 1820 (??).
John's third marriage to Mary Nash Libby was in 1832 when he was age 48 and she was age 16. He died just four years later leaving Mary, then age 20, with children from previous marriages and with two by Mary. Mary petitioned the probate court for rights of administration of John's estate for which she posted a $3,000 bond. The petition gave John's date of death and was granted on 7 Feb 1837 [WCPR 9:168]. Mary apparently was unable to sign her name as all probate records contain her mark. On 4 Apr 1837, Mary again petitioned the probate court for license to sell the personal estate of John Hall at public auction which was approved [WCPR 9:185].
Ichabod Bucknam, Temple Coffin and Elisha Coffin were ordered by the probate court to inventory the estate of John Hall on 7 Feb 1837 [WCPR 9:206]. The inventory was submitted to the court on 4 Apr 1837 and consisted of:
Real Estate $2050.00 Homestead $1300.00 Adjoining 15 acres of dyke marsh $750.00
Personal Estate $701.18 1 pair oxen $70.00 1 pair 2 year old steers $100.00 7 cows $175.00 1 2 year old heifer $10.00 2 calves $12.00 26 sheep $52.00 1 horse $70.00 etc.
John's personal estate was sold at auction as ordered (except for two cows valued at $50.00) for $510.46. Mary used $477 of the proceeds to pay debts as follows:
Reuben Cole $4.00 William Nash $53.53 Holmes Nash $24.24 Ichabod Bucknam $4.00 Wm Mitchell $18.71 Temple Coffin $5.00 Wm Bowen $4.46 Joseph Adams $2.00 Reuben Cole $3.00 Elisha Coffin $25.01 Richard Collins $11.58 Wm Freeman $21.00 Lucy Huntley $20.00 A Chandler $79.79 Eunice Randall $20.00 Freedom Ramsdell $22.47 Otis Cole $18.83 David Coffin $49.27 herself $18.00 Printing $4.00 Auctioneer $2.00 5% comm on $560.46 = $28.02 legal advice $15.00 Oran Hall $23.15
Mary was granted dower's right to the real estate of John Hall 8 Jun 1837 [WCPR 9:250].
John's minor children were appointed guardians on 7 Jun 1837 as follows:
Jordan W Hall, under the age of 14; Otis Cole Fidelia Hall, under the age of 14; Otis Cole Redman Hall, under the age of 14; Job Libby Dorcas Hall, under the age of 14; Job Libby Elizabeth Hall, minor over the age of 14; Otis Cole Sarah Hall, minor over the age of 14; Otis Cole
Elizabeth and Sarah, at a later date, (1 Jan 1838), chose Nehemiah Allen as their guardian. On the same date, Orrin Hall, Rosalla Hall, Rufus Hall and Sophronia Hall, "children & heirs of adult age of John Hall" petitioned the court to also appoint Nehemiah Allen as guardian to Jordan W Hall and Fidelia Hall, both under the age of 14. Nehemiah was granted the guardianship of the four children and was also given license (1 May 1838), along with Job Libby, to sell the real estate of John Hall, subject to his widow's dower, and to use the proceeds for the care of the children.
Mary married second at Harrington ME [marriage int filed at Harrington ME 3 Feb 1838] Abner N Cole. Her children by John Hall (Tristram and Dorcas) lived with them in 1840. John's other minor children (Sarah, Elizabeth, Jordan and Fidelia) can not yet be located in 1840 (they should have been with the family of Nehemiah Allen?).
