1    JOSIAH ⁴ LIBBY [# 48] s/o DAVID ³ LIBBY( DAVID ², JOHN ¹) and ESTHER ³ HANSCOMB was born at Kittery ME 25 Oct 1716 [KitteryVR]; died at ? abt 1782; married at Scarborough ME 22 Jun 1742 Mary ³ Stone, d/o Daniel Stone and Sarah Jenkins;

Josiah Libby left Kittery ME with his father and moved to Scarborough ME where he was a farmer on, or near, Scottow's Hill.

Three of Josiah's younger brothers (George, Timothy & David) were among the association of "Sixteen persons", 13 of whom lived at Scarborough, that was formed to build a double saw mill at Machias ME, unsettled at that time. Fifteen of the associates left for Machias in the latter part of April, 1763. They arrived 20 May 1763 [History of Machias, pg 12-13]. Of Josiah's brothers, George died unmarried, Timothy died just 3 years after arriving in Machias, and David moved to Providence RI just a few years after his brother Timothy died. A number of Timothy's children married in Machias.

According to "widow Mary Libbee" in her statement to a committee appointed by the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on 12 May 1784 [BHM pg 485], "... her husband, Josiah Libbee, took up land by the side of Buck's Harbor {now Machiasport ME} eighteen years ago {about 1766}, and built on said land, and has been improving ever since till about two years ago {about 1782}, said Libbee died. The Libby Family, Charles T Libby, gives Josiah's death as 1786 but that is inconsistent with his wife's statement.

The same petition contained statements by two of Josiah's sons, Josiah & Nathan, that they had also taken up land at Buck's Harbor and "...built and improved on same for about twelve years." This indicates that they had settled there about 1772, however, they would only have been about age 14 and 13 at that time!

On 24 Apr 1786, widow Mary Libbee & sons Josiah & Nathan were ordered to appear in court in reference to creditors of Josiah Libbee [WCPR 1:24].

Reuben probably came to Buck's Harbor (now Machiasport ME) with his father about 1766. He would have been about age 21 at the time.

His marriage to Rebecca Weston was recorded by Rev Ephraim Clark, pastor of the 2d parish of Falmouth ME.

Rebecca Weston & her sister, Hannah Weston, carried ammunition from Jonesboro ME to Machias ME during the settlers attack on the British ship, Margaretta, in Machias harbor, a distance of about 16 miles through the woods.

Reuben settled on the south side of Chandler's River in Jonesboro.

Joseph probably came from Scarborough ME to Buck's Harbor (now Machiasport ME) with his father about 1766. He would have been about age 19 at the time.

By 1790 he had moved to Harrington ME, the home of his wife, Jane Cole [Harrington 1790 census].

Joseph received lot #49 in Harrington (near a location then and now called Carrying Place Cove on the road to Ripley Neck). He and Ebenezer Cole, his father-in-law, both of #5, sold this lot to Thomas Cottle of Tisbury [WCD 1:546]. However, on 4 Apr 1798 Joseph again sold this same lot to Jesse Plummer of #6 (Addison) [WCD 2:197].

Joseph lived at Harrington ME [1790-1840]. Census records do not appear consistent with his known children.

Elijah may have gone to Machias with his father, but if so, he eventually moved to Saco ME where he tended the Nonesuch gristmill [LibbyGen]. He later moved to Buxton ME where he died.

The Libby Family genealogy gives 4 children, all by Mary.

Josiah's farm at Machiasport was later occupied by his son Luther.

Josiah first settled on a farm at Jonesboro ME and then moved to Charleston ME between 1814 -1817 where he lived until old age. He died in No 11 R 1 plantation, Aroostook Co ME.

Joseph lived on his father's homestead in Jonesboro ME until 1825. He then moved to Beddington ME where he stayed until 1845. From Beddington, Joseph moved to Rutland WI. He only stayed two years before returning to Beddington.

Nathan lived and died on his father's homestead in Jonesboro ME.

Although the Libby Family genealogy by Charles T Libby is comprehensive in its' coverage of various Washington County ME Libby families, very little information is given on Job Libby of Harrington ME. The loss of various town records have made it difficult to document this family.

Job's 1st marriage [given by the Libby Family genealogy] can be verified by the death certificate of daughter, Mary, which gives her parents as Jobe Libby & Rebecca Mitchell.

Job's 2nd marriage to "Mrs Mary Pinkham of Steuben" is given by the Harrington ME marriage records. Mrs Mary Pinkam is probably Mary "Polly" Sargent Royal, divorcee (?) of Nahum S Pinkham of Steuben.

The Libby Family genealogy only gives one child of Job Libby (Fellows Libby), however, other data proves, or suggests, additional children. We know from Mary Libby's death record that she was a child of Job & Rebecca. Harrington ME census records for 1820-1870 provide an outline to use in determining Job's other children. These census records suggest:

female, born 1825-1830, gone by 1850 (have not determined who this is)
female, born 1830-1835, gone by 1850 (this must be Eliza)

Fellows Libby and Eliza Libby are included as children because (1) they each lived with or near Job Libby in several census enumerations for 1850-1870, (2) their ages and dates of marriage are consistent with the 1820-1840 census enumerations and (3) no other reasonable explanation for their parents can be found.

On 7 Jun 1837, Job Libby was appointed guardian of his two grandchildren, Redman Hall and Dorcas Hall, children of the late John Hall and Mary Libby. Mary remarried before 1840 and her two children were living with her in 1840 rather than with Job Libby.

The Machias Union of 4 Dec 1877 says: "Died: In Harrington. Nov 30, Mr Job Libby 91 years 7 days. A soldier of 1812 in Capt Holmes Nash's Co & Capt Sherman Leland's Co [widow's certificate #16473 issued to Mary]. His last battle fought and victory won."

Ephraim lived on his father's homestead until his father died in 1844. Ephraim then moved to Charleston ME where he died.

The Libby Family genealogy has very little information on this family. Early Pleasant River Families appears to have the first two wives reversed.

The death certificate of daughter Sarah (born 1835) indicates that her mother's name was Sarah McAley, b NS. Was this an error made by confusing the names of Luther's first and second wives?

The Libby Family genealogy gives Luther's 1st marriage date as 8 Jan 1811. Given the birth date of Luther's oldest child, the date of 1817 in the Machias ME records appears incorrect.

The Libby Family genealogy and Edmund's gravestone indicate that he was born 2 Apr 1810. His death date on his gs is unreadable.

Edmund lived at Beddington ME until 1845 when he moved to Deblois ME where he died.

The Libby Family genealogy and Early Families of Pleasant River give Joshua's birth date as 7 Apr 1822. His birth is in the Beddington ME birth records but his birth probably occurred at Jonesboro.

Joshua lived at Columbia, Deblois, Beddington and Machias before moving to Minneapolis MN in 1871.

Daniel was a farmer and lumberman at Deblois ME. In the mid 1800s, he had served 29 years as town clerk, 27 years as constable and 8 years as postmaster.

Lewis moved to Kingston MN about 1859 and to Washington State by 1900. He died at Gull Harbor WA.

Rebecca Libby's death record says that her parents were Fellows & Malissa Libby. However, no children had been born to Fellows & Malissa after 22 years of marriage and Malissa was age 46 when Rebecca was born. No other explanation has been found so Rebecca is listed as a child.

Fellows' second daughter, Minnie Libby, was born about 1872. However, Fellows first wife had apparently died by 1870 and Fellows didn't marry Frances Pinkham until 1876. Is Minnie a daughter of Frances Pinkham prior to her marriage to Fellows Libby?

The Libby Family genealogy says Asa was born in Beddington.

Asa was a farmer and lumberman in Beddington. He served as selectman, town clerk, etc. and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
