1    JOHN MITCHELL [# 57] s/o? was born at ? abt 1760; died at ? bet 1835-1840; married (1) at ? bef 1783 Jane Mitchell(mn) d/o ? and ?; married (2) at ? [marriage int filed at Harrington ME 24 Apr 1832] Sally Robinson(mn) [HarrMR] d/o ? and ?;

After a number of years researching John Mitchell of Harrington ME, his parents have not yet been identified. Several John Mitchells have been identified with similar birth dates, places of birth and Revolutionary War experience but nothing definitive has been located.

The Harrington ME Register (1905) says "John Mitchell moved to this town from Harpswell. He was a Revolutionary War soldier and had a large family. Mr Mitchell first settled on Dyer's Island but afterwards occupied a lot at Marshville {Marshville section of Harrington}. His death occurred at the age of ninety-four." {died 1854?}.

John Mitchell apparently settled at Harrington between 1790-1794. He was not listed in the 1790 census but he did receive settlers lot #43 at Harrington in 1794. On 15 Mar 1798, John Mitchell of Harrington sold lot #43 to Isaiah Nash of Addison [WCD 2:219].

The 1905 Harrington Register (above) states that he had a large family but only a few children have been identified. The Harrington register states that he died at the age of 94 but this would put his death date at 1854 and John can not be found in the 1840 or 1850 census.

John must have had a wife named Jane in 1790 as the Machias marriage record for Sukey Mitchell (17 Nov 1818), born about 1790, says that she was the d/o John & Jane Mitchell of Harrington. John and Jane must have married before settling at Harrington and probably had several children by then.

On 7 Apr 1818, John submitted the following application for a Civil War pension:

"I John Mitchell of the Town of Harrington in the County of Washington and Commonwealth of Massachusetts do certify that I was enlisted into the continental army at Boston some time in the month of July in the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy six by Capt Davis, joined the Regiment commanded by Col Joseph Vose, from thence marched to Rhode Island in the state of Rhode Island from thence was marched to different places on the North River, in the fall of the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven joined the army commanded by General Gates at Still Water and was at the capture of General Burgoynes's army - from that time I continued in the service at different places until I was discharged at West Point some time in the month of July in the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine by Col Vose - I am now fifty eight years old, and in indigent circumstances and stand in need of assistance from my country. John Mitchell (his mark)." The document was witnessed by James Campbell, Judge of the CC of C Pleas Eastern Circuit of Mass.

From this document, we can estimate John's birth as about 1760 and it appears he was not able to sign his name (this fact has been used in comparing him to other John Mitchells).

On 15 Apr 1819, John amended his above pension application by adding, in part, that ",,,on oath do testify and say that I served as a Private soldier in Col Vose's Regiment, General Glover's Brigade in the Massachusetts line..."

John's first application must have been denied. On 24 Dec 1835, John submitted a second application for a pension:

"I John Mitchell of Addison {Addison crossed out and Harrington written in} in the County of Washington and State of Maine, aged seventy five years, do, upon oath declare, in order to obtain the benefit of a Resolve of the Legislature of Maine, passed March 17, 1835 ...that I enlisted a Private Soldier in Capt ??? Company, Col Joseph Vose Commanding for term of three years and was discharged at west point at the end of said term of three years ??. I do further on oath declare that at the time of my said enlistment, I was an inhabitant of North Yarmouth ... and was on the 17th day of March, 1835, ... an inhabitant of the State of Maine, residing in Harrington aforesaid, where I have resided for forty years ... John Mitchell (his mark)" This document was witnessed by Thomas Mitchell and Benjamin Mitchell.

From this document we can be more assured of John's birth date of 1760, reaffirm that he seems unable to sign his name, ascertain that he is still living in 1835 and estimate his time of arrival in Harrington as 1795 (other records suggest a date a bit earlier).

Charles Fletcher, who was assigned to examine John's 1835 petition wrote to the Secretary of Department War"

"I hereby certify that the foregoing pages ... are truly copied from the original on file in the Pension Office, War Department: and I do further certify that it appears from the Rolls of Service of Col Vose's Regiment that John Mitchell a private enlisted on the 10th of April 1777 for three years and is mustered in Capt Robert Davis's Company from the month of January to June inclusive in the year 1778. 'ommitted in April 1779, joined in August 1780' ."

John's claim was rejected with a notation that he did not serve three years.

The Genealogy of Edward Small, pg 1501, discusses the Revolutionary War record of John Hayes Mitchell, s/o Horton & Sarah Mitchell of North Yarmouth ME. This John Mitchell was baptized 4 Feb 1761 (making him the correct age) and his Revolutionary War experience included enlistment 3 Dec 1776, service with Col Joseph Vose, service at Still Water, surrender of Burgoyne, etc.

The same reference also discusses another John Mitchell, parents unknown, whose Revolutionary War experience included enlistment 9 Dec 1776, service with Col Joseph Vose, service at Rhode Island, and probably could not write.

Surprisingly, both of the above John Mitchells appeared on a list of deserters from the First Massachusetts Regiment, Col Joseph Vose, dated Camp Highlands NY 13 Jul 1780. The former, John Hayes Mitchell, was described as "Age 19 years; stature 5 ft 7 in; complexion, light; hair, black; place of residence New Gloucester, ME (near North Yarmouth)." The latter, John Mitchell, was described as "Age 21 years,stature 5 ft 8 in; complexion dark, hair, black; birthplace North Yarmouth; residence, North Yarmouth."

The latter John Mitchell would appear to be the one that moved to Harrington ME. Although several references refer to John Mitchell of Harrington ME as John Hayes Mitchell, no documentation has been found giving the middle name of the John Mitchell of Harrington.

Why were he and his wife, Elizabeth, living apart in 1850?

Thomas was living at Jonesport ME in 1860 (age 77).

John Mitchell first appears in the census records at Harrington ME in 1830 although he can be accounted for in 1800, 1810 and 1820 as the male living with his father, John Mitchell of Harrington.

Marriage intentions were recorded by Colin Campbell as "March 3d, 1821. John Mitchell Jr and Miss Margaret Nash both of Harrington" [Historical Sketch of Cherryfield and Harrington, AS Willey, 1893]. Harrington marriage intentions copied by Margaret Kelly Ashe Colton in 1936/37 give the intention date as 21 Nov 1821. The death records of at least 2 children also verify this marriage.

In the 1830 Harrington census, John's wife, Margaret, does not appear to be living with him. EPRF says that Margaret died 17 Mar 1834 but where is she in 1830?

In 1833, John's 5 children were all appointed guardians. Did John die by then or was he just unable to care for them because his wife was ill/dead?

If John did not die by 1833, he must be the John Mitchell that married Resilda Pinkham. In the Gouldsboro ME town records, he was called John Mitchell Jr in his marriage certificate to Resildia Pinkham.

It appears from the 1840 census of John E Mitchell that he is the same person as this John Mitchell and that his sons, William (age 14) & Freeman (age 12), from his 1st marriage are living with them. However, William also appears to be living with Nehemiah Allen in 1840.

John moved from Harrington to Milbridge between 1860 and 1870.

John's death record does not name his parents

Addison ME marriage records give a marriage date of 22 Jul 1839 which doesn't look correct.

Benjamin was a farmer at Harrington ME.

William moved to Machiasport between 1850-1860.

He must have divorced Isabella by 1870 and married Ellen -?-, born Apr 1844 and living at Machiasport in 1900 age 56, (2 of her 4 children were still living).

William is buried at the Machiasport cemetery.

The Harrington 1900 census says that James was born Jan 1820. He was of Machiasport in 1836 but returned to Harrington where he was a seaman for the rest of his life.

William was bound to Nehemiah Allen (#5925) in 1833 and appears to be living with Nehemiah in 1840.

William was a seaman at Harrington [1840, 1870-80] and Cutler [1860]. He was divorced by 1880 [1880 census records].

Freeman was bound to Eli Dinsmore in 1833 but he does not appear to be living with him in 1840.

Freeman was a sailor at Harrington ME 1850-1900, except for 1870. He must have been at Lubec in 1867 where his son, Edgar, was born and may be listed in the 1870 Lubec census near the end which is very faint and illegible.

Lewis served during the Civil War in Co H 1st ME Hvy Artillery, mustered in 21 Feb 1863 (single?), died in the Field Of Exhaustion 21 Jun 1864.

If Lewis died in 1864, how could he have had a son, Ira, born about 1866?

I had his birth date as 3 Oct 1834 [source?] but that date must be in error. His parents weren't married until 1836 and his age at death, as well as census records, gives his birth as about 1837.
