These birth records are from documents prepared by Margaret Kelley Ashe Colton in 1937 and located at both the DAR Library at Washington DC and the CT State Library at Hartford CT. Thanks again to Chuck Huckins for his many hours of preparing this data for upload to the internet.
Records are grouped into 3 categories. A brief explanation is necessary to understand the validity of the records.
Category 1: "Steuben Births Prior to 1800" - These birth records were originally prepared by Thomas Archibald, Steuben Town Clerk, about Feb. Mar & Apr of 1797 from an unknown source. Then entries seem to have been recorded somewhat corresponding to when the event occurred through about 1800. These records appear to be quite accurate.
Category 2: "Steuben Births by Family" - These records appear to have been prepared by Margaret Kelley Ashe Colton from several sources, occasionally including Steuben marriage records and occasionally containing dates/names from Margaret's research. Most of the birth records from "Steuben Births Prior to 1800" are repeated here as well as birth records from about 1800 to about 1870-1880. It seems that there are a number of transcription errors exist in these records as noted. Other errors are likely but can not be identified until these records are compared to the original records.
Category 3: "Steuben Births From 1880 to 1900" - Except for a few births before 1892, these birth records appear to be exactly as they were recorded by Town Clerks Roscoe Van Smith, BW Stevens, James C Googins & David C Smith for the years 1892-1900.
