Henry Warsop Succumbs At Age of 93 Years

Henry Warsop, Delphos' oldest citizen and the last surviving Civil War in this community, passed away at his home in Delphos, Sunday, November 21st, aged 93 years, two months and 28 days. He was born near Hamilton Mountain, Canada, August 23, 1844.

As a boy, he moved with his parents to near Union City, Michigan, and in February, 1865, enlisted in Co. D., 24th Regiment, Michigan Infantry, and served until mustered out at the close of the war. He returned to Union City, Michigan, and was united in marriage to Maria Stephens in 1867. To this union three sons and one daughter were born, all of whom survive their father. The family moved to Kansas and settled on a farm near Lamar, Kansas, where the wife and mother died Nov. 25, 1884.

On August 2, 1887, Mr. Warsop was married to Ida Reneaud, who survives him and has been his faithful companion for over 50 years. Following their marriage, they continued to live on the farm until 1897, when they moved to Delphos, where Mr. Warsop took up the carpenter trade, which he had learned as a boy working with his father. He worked at this trade until failing health and age caused him to lay aside his tools. Many of the finest homes in Delphos and vicinity stand as mementos to the works of his hands.

For over 40 years, he lived as a citizen of Delphos, Kansas, and until failing health prevented, was actively interested in both local and national government affairs. He read much and was a student of economics and social science, and wrote and delivered a number of lectures on these subjects.

He was a man of determination and strong will, and respected because of his good citizenship and character. He was a member of the IOOF lodge.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ida Warsop, of Delphos, Kansas; a daughter, Mrs. Martha Barney, of Columbia City, Ind.; and three sons, Will Warsop, of Beardsley, Kansas, Alfred Warsop of Alexander, N.Y. and M.A. Warsop, of Cleveland, Ohio; one half-sister, Mrs. Margaret Eitinier, of Union City, Michigan; also several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted from the family home, Tuesday afternoon, in charge of the IOOF lodge, assisted by Rev. J.A. McClellan. Music was furnished by a mixed quartet, composed of Mrs. Floyd Powell, Mrs. Ethel Thurston, B.S. Chance and L.D. Clingenpeel. The body was taken to Hall Cemetery* for interment, and the Legion firing squad paid its respects at the graveside. Roy Hartley, funeral director.

*he is buried in Delphos Cemetery.
