[S115] Carl Bennett records, About the same time the indenture was discovered, we learned that a gentleman named Richard Mather of Kent, Ohio, had hired a genealogist to search German records for Matthias and had come up with his baptism, his marriage record, and the baptism of his first child, Eva.
The later two were from Graben, which like Durlach, is in the Karlsruhe District on the Rhine. But Matthias' own baptism was from Talheim, a small village outside of the city of Tuttlingen on the Danube. We don't know why Matthias moved from the Danube to the Rhine, but if he was already thinking of coming to America it was a logical move, since the Rhine was the route to Rotterdam and the emigrant ships. It is fortunate that the marriage record gives his father as Heinrich Irion late of Talheim or it would have been hard to know if these records all belonged to the same Matthias Irion.
Notice that on the Graben records there is a short line drawn across the stem of the first letter of the surname. This was one of the distinguishing marks of capital "I" in the old German script. However, in the Talheim record the "I" is dotted, which matches the style used by Matthias himself in writing his initials.
There is no further record of Eva. If she was born and baptised the same day, she may not have been expected to live. Even if she did, few infants were able to survive the hardships and diseases of the emigrant ships. Nevertheless, Richard chose to believe that Eva was the same person named as Elizabeth in Matthias' will. I can't say that is impossible, but it does not seem to me the most likely scenario. I mention this because on some websites you may find it given that Elizabeth was born in 1731, and that is only because Richard identified her with Eva.
Note also that some websites say Maria Magdalena's father was Jacob Andreas Pfister, but the marriage record says he was Conrad Pfister.
The copies attached were obtained from microfilm at the library in Salt Lake City by Margaret Sopp. They are only partially translated because they are so hard to read, but the essentials are there.
