non-surgical specialty which combines aspects of
neurology, orthopedics, and rheumatology. The
Physiatrist (specialist in Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation) focuses in on the evaluation and
treatment of disabling conditions such as
neuromuscular diseases, arthritis, spinal cord
injuries, chronic pain, stroke, overuse
syndromes, peripheral neuropathies, carpal
tunnel syndrome, and occupational injuries.
Patients may be seen in the hospital after a
stroke or accident. They may seek rehabilitation
services after a work or other accident. Other
patients may want follow-up treatment after a
sports injury. Rehabilitation medicine covers
the wide spectrum of disabling
