The following is taken from a letter recently sent to the Helfgotts.
It is from a fan in Queensland, Australia.

Let me tell you one story about my experience with David Helfgott.

It is pretty difficult!  How one can express the silence with words, the feelings which cannot be seen, heard, touched or tasted.  You can do it David, because you are of the very few ones - the genius.  But I'll try my best.

So when I got your "Brilliantissimo" CD, ran home, ripped the pack open, started playing it, and because I was very hungry, peeled one banana and started eating it.  After a few seconds - as you started playing Liszt - I forgot that my mouth was full of banana, I forgot who I was, where I was.  The music started flowing through me like the sweetest honey and when it reached my heart, I fully opened up, and I felt the essence of the Divine................I slowly came back, I noticed I still had the banana in my mouth and crocodile tears were rolling down my face.  Don't think that I was sad - oh no -  just my body and nervous system could not handle the bliss.  Thank you, thank you very much.

Before Franc Liszt was not my cup of tea.  Even though I have heard many artists presenting his music - they just didn't touch me.  Well, they didn't know how to play Liszt in the "brilliantissimo" way, as you do.  Today Franc Liszt is one of my favourite composers - thanks to you.

Liszt said -

"The virtuoso is not a mason who, chisel in hand, faithfully and conscientiously whittles stone after the design of an architect.  He is not a passive tool reproducing feeling and thought and adding nothing of himself....Spiritedly written musical works are in reality, for the virtuoso, only the magic and moving mise-en-scene for feelings.  He is called upon to make emotion speak, and weep and sing and sigh - to bring it to life in his consciousness.  He creates as the composer himself created, for he himself must live the passions he will call to light in all their brilliance.  He breathes life into the lethargic body, infuses  with fire, enlivens it with the pulse of grace and charm.  He changes the earthy form into a living being, penetrating it with the spark which :Prometheus snatched from Jupiter's flesh.  He must send the form he has created soaring into transparent ether,   he must arm it with thousand winged weapons; he must call up scent and blossom, and breathe the breath of life."
