The following is taken from a letter recently sent to the Helfgotts.
It is from a fan in Texas in the United States of America.
I am a junior in high school and just started piano this August, only to discover it was my life's passion. Anyhow, this letter has been sitting in my mind for quite a while. I must say you and your wife are remarkable people and have touched me in an undesrcibable manner.
I saw "Shine" for the first time during June of this year. Since then, I have seen it no less than 11 or 12 times. Each time, the story stirs my soul. The movie conveys a beautiful message of triumph. I must say it is a masterpiece and your story has remained with me to this day.
I was excited to discover you had recordings out in stores. The first cd I purchased was your live recording of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto and some of his other works.
I must say that you are a spectacular pianist. Each of the many times I have listened to your recording of the Rach 3, I get goose bumps listening to you glide across the keyboard. You have the most expressive and magnificent hands. The beauty you emit with your music is heart stopping. I can't describe how it touches me to hear you play that beast of a concerto. I've listened to it numerous times, feeling myself drawn closer to it every time. It is absolutely magnificent.
Honestly, I can't grasp the words to tell you how much you
inspire me. Thank you for playing so beautifully. It means so very much
to hear you play. Please never cease. It is heavenly to come home from
a stressful day at school and sit for 45 serene minutes and listen to you
play. It calms my nerves and energizes me. I know this all sounds so corny,
but I just want both of you to know that as long as David keeps playing,
I'll keep listening, being a loyal friend and listener well into the future.
