This history of the Falkenburg family is a view of one branch of family ancestry. It links 12 generations from Henry Jacobs Falkinburg to my grandchildren Jon, Ben, and Joseph. The time line spans over three hundred fifty years of the family in America! I present the story of our family, as opposed to a droll list of "who begat whom". When I began, I had no idea I would be able to accomplish this. As I uncovered more information, the chapters began to fall into place. Occasionally I speculate about an event, but I clearly indicate this as conjecture. Here I list outstanding questions, and present a list of resources which are not currently part of Falkinburg History section, but which may be helpful in expanding the story.
Throughout this history the reader will encounter various expressions of the family name. In the 1600s families of northern European extraction did not have surnames as we know them today. Henry the son of Jacob would often be called Henry Jacobson (sometimes shortened to Henry Jacobs). This is a patronymic designation. Of course as populations grew, there were many Henry Jacobsons. Thus, family names evolved to represent occupations or regions in which the family lived. Thus, we might have Henry Jacobs Falkinburg; Henry son of Jacob from the town of Falkinburg {H.1}. We will return to this discussion later. It is also important to remember that not everyone was literate and sometimes names evolved as life events were recorded and transcribed.
