Genealogy Notes

a
The earliest record of Henry Jacobs Falkinburg is in the 1771 Census of the Delaware in which Henry is listed as married the the daughter of Sinnick Broer. Most records in the LDS databases indicate a birthdate about 1650. The will of Henry Jacobs Falkinburg is recorded in: Honeyman, A. van Doren, Calendar of New Jersey wills (see Notes Ch. 2). The will is dated 1740 and it was proved in 1743. If Henry was born in 1650, this would indicate that he lived to the age of 93. It is likely, therefore, that the birthdate of 1650 is reasonably accurate.
b
There is no record of the data of birth of Mary of Swedesboro. Blackman [2.15] indicates that Henry moved to Little Egg Harbor in 1698, and it was subsequent to that time that he made a trip back to the Delaware in search of a wife. Blackman’s description of the marriage is a rather informal affair for which there would certainly be no public record. The date 1698 for the marriage of Henry and Mary is an estimate that is consistent with the facts we know. Records of Mary’s birth listed in the LDS databases indicate a year about 1679. However, the place of her birth is reported as Little Egg Harbor. That is certainly incorrect. In 1679 there were no white inhabitants of the region. The birthdate of 1679 is feasible in terms of her marriage to Henry. The stories indicate that she was preaching within her Quaker community before coming to Little Egg Harbor, which means that it is unlikely that she was born before this time
c
The family of Henry Jacobs Falkinburg II and Penelope Stout is documented by Blackman [2.37]
d
Henry Jacobs Falkinburg II is listed in the LDS databases with birth dates that range from 1701 to 1706. The most frequent birthdate is 1702. Most records indicate a death date of 1799. If correct, this would indicate a longevity of some 97 years, remarkable for this time in history. Another account claims that Henry lived to the age of 102. [2.39] The date of the 1731 marriage between Henry Jacobs Falkinburg II and Penelope Stout (of Shrewsbury, NJ is documented in Quaker records and recorded in [2.40]
e
There are conflicting records regarding the Ancestry of Penelope Stout. What is known with reasonable assurance is that she was the grand daughter of the Richard Stout and Penelope van Princess. Harold Stout [2.32] reports that the Penelope who married Henry Jacobs Falkinburg was the daughter of Richard Stout 2 (eldest son of Richard Stout and Penelope van Princess). This is corroborated in Leah Blackman’s History of Little Egg Harbor [2.15]. Blackman states that this younger Penelope is the sister of Rebecca Stout, daughter of Richard Stout and Mary Seymour who married John Cranmer. Since Richard Stout remarried and we don’t have an exact date, Penelope’s mother could be Frances West. The birthdate generally reported for this Penelope is 1676. This would make her 55 years old when she married Henry. This is possible, but unlikely. In addition, the death date for Penelope (Stout) Falkinburg is often given as 1799. One may conclude that the birthdate is likely in error.
f
Meldrum p. 224 (from Little Egg Harbor Monthly Meeting) "13th da, 11th mo, 1760 John Folkenburg granted a certificate to marry."   David Absalom states that John died in January 1786 shortly after moving from Little Egg Harbor to Pennsylvania and that an auction of his estate occurred in Feburary.
g
Hannah Falkinburg married Richard Buffin [2.40]. Birthdate and the date of death are given in the Quaker records [2.44a] as 5th mo, 15th da, 1746 (OS) and 12th mo, 22nd da, 1831 (assume recorded in NS calendar). The Buffin family, like the Falkinburgs, were some of the earliest residents of the colonial Delaware colonies. Richard Buffin’s great grandfather Michael Buffin was born in 1662 in Tenterden, Kent, England. He emigrated to the region of the Colony of New Jersey near the Delaware River. As early as 1686 there is a record in Revel’s Book of Surveys which refers to land owned by Michael Buffin in Springfield Township, Burlington, New Jersey. [2.45]
h
There are few records for Mary Falkinburg. In [2.46] there is a record that she married David Antrim, born 4 SEP 1743. This David married three times and Mary was his second wife.
