DARN
Who- What-Why -When -Where
The Mission of DARN is to provide emergency/backup communications for
Catholic Charities (C.C.) Diocese of Venice Disaster Response Teams in the
immediate aftermath of a disaster.
DARN was formed by a small group of dedicated volunteer amateur radio
operators who conceived, planned, and finally constructed the UHF/VHF Base
Stations that make up the network using funds obtained from the Catholic
Charities USA Inc.
Catholic Charities Disaster Response Teams respond in the immediate
aftermath of a disaster. Although they are not first responders, they
usually are on the scene of a disaster before first responders. C.C. serves
ALL in need of emergency services when there is no one else available to
meet the need. The types and duration of services is addressed on a case by
case basis.
Currently there are 24 DARN volunteers, their age ranges from 11 to 91
years. We welcome male and female volunteers of all faiths, races and walks
of life; our common bond is “the enjoyment of Amateur Radio as a hobby and a
willingness to give a helping hand when needed”.
DARN seeks licensed amateur radio operators of good character who are
reliable and committed to serve in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
Working as a team, they operate assigned Base Stations; assume Net Control
of Back up Duties from their homes using their own radio equipment; serve as
part of a mobile group using their own vehicle and amateur radio equipment;
and, serve as maintenance and supply person. Day to day operation is under
the control of the C.C. CEO and the DARN Coordinator.
