I have supported more than twenty different clients, many on multiple projects. Most of the clients have been within the Department of Defense. I have also supported clients within the Departments of Justice, Commerce and Energy. In addition, I have supported NATO and both for-profit and non-profit corporations.

Over the years, I have been involved in multiple projects in some areas.  OOTW  has been one of these areas.  OOTW is also known as Military Operations Other Than War (MOOTW), Stability and Support Operations (SASO), Stability, Security, Transition, and Reconstruction (SSTR) Operations. The technical basis is known as Human, Social, Cultural Behavior (HSCB) modeling or Diplomatic, Informational, Military, Economic / Political, Military, Economic, Societal, Information, Infrastructure (DIME/PMESII) modeling.  Verification and Validation (V&V), historical combat research, and psychopharmacology algorithms have also been major areas of continuing work.

The topic shortcuts in the sidebar to the left permit access to potential areas of interest, with links to projects addressing that area. The range of topics indicates the multi-disciplinary nature of typical OR projects. Although some of the topics have been relevant for only one or two projects, many have been significant parts of numerous projects.

Until mid-2001, I was Senior Member of the Research Staff at the Department of Energy Oak Ridge facilities and Senior Scientist of the Center for Modeling, Simulation, and Gaming in the Advanced Computing Technologies (ACT) Division. I joined the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1986, working in the Energy Division, at that time managed and operated by Martin Marietta Energy Systems. My group moved to DSRD at the K-25 Plant under Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, then moved to Corporate control. Later we moved to the Y-12 Plant and changed the division name to ACT.

I worked at Milliken & Co., a textile firm, from 1977 to 1986. I started in middle management in the Operations Research Department, staying for two years, moved into Production Planning for several years, and then spent two years in Marketing, applying OR in each position.

I served four years active duty in the Army (1973-1977) and several years in the reserves. A Vietnam Veteran, I completed the Signal Officer Basic Course and the Signal Officer Advanced Course. My active duty station was at the Command and Control Technical Center (CCTC, later renamed JDSSC) in the Pentagon, supporting The Joint Staff's combat modeling activities.

Author of the book, Predicting Combat Effects, published in 2001; co-author of the book, OOTW Analysis and Modeling Techniques (OOTWAMT) Workshop Proceedings, published in 1999, and co-author of the book, NATO Code of Best Practice for C² Assessment, published in 2002.  Author of two chapters in Warfare Modeling, 1995, one chapter in Analytic Approaches to the Study of Future Conflict, 1996, and one chapter in Textbook of Treatment Algorithms in Psychopharmacology, 1999. Also published in Operations Research, Naval Research Logistics, Military Operations Research, Bulletin of the American Society for Information Science, Information Technology and Libraries, The Encyclopedia of Operations Research, Psychopharmacology Bulletin, Psychiatric Annals, Phalanx, OR/MS Today, and numerous conference proceedings. Awarded the Koopman prize for best publication in military operations research in 1994.
