Topic: Ontologies

Dr. Dean S. Hartley III

Ontologies in computer science are descriptions of a domain of knowledge. They have some of the nature of a dictionary in that they define the key elements of the domain and some of the nature of a taxonomy in that they show the connections among the elements.  An ontology can be as simple as an annotated diagram and as complex as a computer readable file using the Web Ontology Language (OWL).
