Guppies

Click on the picture of the fish to download a tank with a male and a pregnant female of that pure strain. Hatch fish from copies of the tanks, just like you would with the Fish of the Week egg tanks.

To stabilize a strain, I set up a tank at 100X with a single pair that might produce a nice combination, then select the best of the males and a random female from generation two. From generation three, I select an offspring male that looks like the father, and another random female. Once I start getting broods where all the male fry are the same, I've named the pair "gen 1 pure". This goes on, and when I've had ten successive generations of identical phenotype, then I breed for a pregnant female for the strain tank. Often I have to backtrack up to generation two or three. It's a lot of work, and it involves checking each of two hundred tanks every ten hours or so. I don't warp, and I don't use Fisherman. A lot of work. Enjoy the guppies, and understand why I stopped naming strains based on naming conventions from other peoples' sites, which I was doing in patently silly mode before I realized how many strains there were and the impossibility of naming them all uniquely in a system that makes sense. (Yeah, I'm still giving each individual fish a proper name, but that's different. That's just because I'm crazy.)

My thanks to everyone who has to listen to me rant about the guppies while I work on them. None of these people have /kickbanned me, not even once. Several of them have expressed interest, which must have been particularly difficult. I don't know if this is because I'm cute, because I'm witty, or because I just remind them that they're not as crazy as they could be.
