Schola Cantorum on Hudson

Schola Cantorum on Hudson, a thirty-five-voice choral ensemble based in downtown Jersey City, is in its eleventh season as an independent non-profit organization. Educational and community outreach have been partnered with a passion for artistic excellence from the time of the group's inception. Drawing not only from Hudson County, but from Manhattan, suburban New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, as well, members audition for placement in SCH, and represent many professions, including that of musician.*

"The small choir, founded by Deborah Simpkin King a decade ago, has an energy and level of technical preparation that only a few such nonprofessional groups in the state have. . . . The singing was clear and self-assured, the direction by King consistent and exact, and the result a riveting reading of this gorgeous, eight-part a cappella score . . ."
--Willa Conrad, The Star-Ledger
"Most musical ensembles engage in outreach activities, whether it be reaching towards young audiences or making performances more accessible to more people. Schola Cantorum on Hudson, however, practices a somewhat different type of outreach . . . In one swoop they set a high standard for handling outreach activities and set a precedent for ensembles reaching beyond their doors to integrate their art with the life of their community."
--Robert Butts, Classical New Jersey
