Is it wrong to want to have sex with the girl who plays Lizzie McGuire?
Fox must be stopped. Not the Fox News Channel. They are a refreshing alternative to CNN, PMSNBC, and the regular network newscasts. What I am referring to is the Fox Network. I will say at the outset that I've been watching Fox from the very beginning, first tuning to the new Fox affiliate in Miami when home from college on breaks in 1987 or so. In the early days shows like "The Tracey Ullman Show", "Married With Children" and "The Simpsons" were something not previously seen on network TV. The network grew in size and viewership in the 1990's. For a while in the late 90's and early 00's, I found myself watching more Fox than CBS, NBC or ABC. But times have changed. Reality TV has taken over on all networks. And just as the Fox News Channel has a tendency to overdo sensational and salacious stories (O.J. Simpson, Jon Bennet Ramsey, Chandra Levy, etc.), the Fox Network just can't help but further the slimy and intrusive slide into the pit of reality TV. Perhaps the first reality show was Fox's "Cops", but it was not really the mother of the current crop of crap. It may have been CBS's "Survivor", which was quickly mimicked by "The Mole", "Big Brother" and all the other nosy "let's peek through the neighbor's window" shows. That stuff is bad enough, but Fox's "Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire", "Temptation Island" "Joe Millionaire", "Mr. Personality" and all the other insipid televised dating contests. There is a voyeurism that has taken over in America (and some other Western nations) that is just sickening. And it's a wicked voyeurism. The reason people watch these shows is not to see someone succeed, but to watch painful failure. The big thing about "American Idol" isn't enjoying a young unknown performer belting out a great tune. It's all about hearing how that smart-ass Simon guy is going to insult the next less than perfect contestant. The bitching and in-fighting on the dating/marriage shows are more interesting than the harmony. Even on "Weakest Link" we had to hear all the losers vent about how they thought other contestants had it out for them. These programs are on the air for two reasons: they are inexpensive to make and stupid people watch them. But the other big problem I have with this crap is that it is always on. Not just the number of programs on the big networks, but the frequency. This week, Fox is showing "American Idol" on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. I don't know when the shows I want to watch are on anymore. Half the time they are preempted by one of these stupid shows. This trend seems to have started with ABC and "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?". That damn show was on almost every night of the week and it ultimately killed the show. I cannot wait for this reality show trend to end, maybe with one final show called "When Reality Shows Attack". On Fox of course.
And another thing...
When will politicians ever learn? This time it's Sen. Rick Santorum (R) of Pennsylvania. In the process of supporting the current Supreme Court ruling that upholds state sex laws, he likened homosexuality to bestiality, incest and polygamy. (I have read the unedited interview and while Sen. Santorum is claiming that he said no such thing it is quite easy to infer the meaning.) Just one more Republican ticking off the gay community and furthering the belief that Republicans hate gays. This is one reason I no longer consider myself a Republican. The party is constantly shooting itself in the foot. But I'm not going to discuss the political part of this issue. I want to discuss the ridiculousness of sex laws. In the olden days, almost every state had laws against sodomy and all sorts of other "evil" acts in the bedroom. Most states have eliminated those laws, but they still exist in places. I cannot understand the obsession with what people do in the privacy of their own homes. By the way, the sodomy laws make certain acts between married couple illegal as well. So you'd damn well better be doing it only in the missionary position and don't get any funny ideas about sticking that thing in some other orifice. I just cannot wrap my mind around the logic of legislating sex. Am I being harmed by two guys down the street buggering each other? I'm going to go even further and annoy some of you with the following. I don't know why bestiality or incest is specifically illegal. No, I'm not endorsing giving the family pet a goof rogering or fiddling around with Uncle Ted. But why are the acts themselves sex crimes? Animal cruelty is a crime. Prosecute bestiality under those laws. We have laws against pedophilia because of the issue of consent of a minor. Most of your incest could be covered by these laws. And as far as adultery and polygamy is concerned, any sexual act that involves a married person that violates the marriage contract can be legislated because the government sanctions the marriage. Therefore, in my opinion the state can then tell you that you can't commit adultery or have multiple spouses, etc. If that's too much of a hassle, don't enter into a state-sanctioned marriage contract. So there you have it. Most of the evil sex acts are already handled by other legislation. All the rest is just picking on homosexuals by the usual suspects. THUMP! (That was a bible.)
Of course, all this is pretty big talk from a guy who ain't gettin' any.
