ELEVENTH GENERATION

1536. Richard Pittenger (Pewtenger) was born in 1650 in Scotland. He immigrated on 29 Jul 1665 to New York.. He died before 16 Oct 1715 in Somerset County, NJ. Another excellent source for info is "The Pittenger Families of New Jersey 1665-1800" by Tress E. Pittenger, Jr. The only copy I've seen is in the Trenton State Library, and I haven't been able to locate him yet to purchase a copy. He uses Wes Pippenger's info, as well as many other researchers, together with public records in US and Europe, Wills, etc. (very well documented).
He concludes that Richard Pewtinger b. ca 1643, the immigrant, came to New Jersey with Philip Carteret on the ship Philip just after July 29, 1665; was married to Annetje Anthony, who PROBABLY had Richard II who married Syche Hendrickse. He discusses at length the possible origins of Richard.
[Annmarie - he shows Henrick the second son of Richard II, and although the book goes into depth about his descendants, I didn't photocopy that portion - sorry)
He also discusses Richard Pittenger the Scot, who purportedly arrived at Perth Amboy in Dec. 1685.
It is an indepth study, too lengthy to re-type here and I'm sure I couldn't do it justice in summarizing.
He does though give the descendants through the early 1800s - I don't have a full copy of this book, only my own line (Richard the immigrant, Richard II, John (b. about 1707), John Jr. (b. 1746), George (1767), Aaron (ca 1796), Aaron Jr. (1833), Charles (1864).

ALSO

I have a set of books titled 'First Settlers of Piscataway New Jersey." In this book Under PITTENGER(PEWTENGER)it reads:This was a First Settler family, of which little authentic has yet been written, but the traces are clear. Richard Pewtenger, the emigrant landed New York, July 29 1665 settl4ed in New Jersey, married Sycha...Died before Oct 16, 1715 in N.J. Sons, Richard md Annetje Anthony, John, md Elizabeth..., Hendrick, and Others. It is said that Richard the emigrant was to have been b. abt 1650 in Scotland. The Pittinger Tradition is practically unanimously "From Holland. Research has shown this is an English name and of the region of Scrooby. It is certain that some of this family fled with the Puritans to Holland.

ALSO:

Your message mentioning Scrooby took me back to information my father gave me years ago, the significance of which didn't grab me at the time. About 30 years ago a cousin of mine lived for a while in England and while there, researched the Pittenger line. According to her, our Pittenger name was originally Scrooby until our ancestors did something great for the King and were rewarded with a pot of gold. Then the name was changed to "Pott" or some other derivison, in honor of bearing the King's Pot. From there the name was changed several times (Pitt,Pott,Pitts) and eventually lengthened to add the "enger" and other endings. I cannot verify this story, but wondered if any of the rest of you have heard it???

ALSO

Priscilla Steelman sent me a copy of her e-mail to you answering your inquiry
about the ancestry of your ancestor Martje Lowe Pittenger who married Pieter
Peterson. As she told you I had peviously researched the Pittenger ancestry
in New Jersey from the original Richard Pewtinger who come to New Jersey in
1665 presumably from The Netherlands up until 1800. This I have compiled in a
booklet, copies of which are on file at the Family History Library in Salt
Lake City, the Library of Congress and libraries in New Jersey, principally
the State Library in Trenton and the Library at Rutgers. I did not do any
work on Marie Lowe Pittenger Peterson and her family as William Peterson had
well documented it in his work on the Peterson and Smock families.
Unfortunately he is deceased and his widow does not have any copies of his
book but it is on microfilm in Salt Lake City and several other places. The
information I have on Martje and Pieter is the same as what you show, except
that I did not have the exact date of their marriege and that both died in
Adams County Ohio sometime after 1813 although I show they had moved from New
Jersey to that part of Virginia which is in the northern panhandle of West
Virginia. Rather than comment specifically on the data you have for Martje
Pittenger's ancestors the following chart shows her direct descendancy from
Richard Pewtinger and his wife Annetje Anthony. Although I cannot guarantee
its accuracy 100% it is as accurate.as I could get from the few documents and
records that exist and the research of others on whom I believe to be
responsible genealogists. As Priss pointed out to you it differs in many ways
from what others had, I believe, erroneously set forth.
Richard Pewtinger b.ca 1643 probably The Netherlands, came to America 29 July
1665 with Philip Carteret on the ship Philip. I believe his ancestry was
English as there were Pettingers in Northern England at that time, some of
whom were Puritans and fled persecution to Holland. There is documentery
evidence of Pettingers from England in Leyden in the early 1600s although I
have not been able to tie Richard into any of the families either in England
or Holland. I believe he married Annetje Anthony either in New York or New
Jersey about 1669 and died probably in Middlesex County, New Jersey before
February 1700 when Annetje is recorded in the Dutch Reformed Church records
in New York, widow of Richard Pittenger.
Their oldest son of record was Richard Pittenger, born about 1675 probably in
Middlesex County. He married Syche Hendrickse about 1700, probably in
Monmouth County. He died before 16 October 1715 in Piscataway Township,
Middlesex County. She had been born after 1670 probably in Monmouth County
possibly the daughter of Hendrick Willemsz Hendrickson and died after 1732 in
either Middlesex or Somerset County,
Their second child of record was Hendrick born about 1704 probably in
Middlesex County and married Marytje Louw about 1726 in Hillsborough
Township, Somerset County. She had been christened 15 September 1703 in the
Harlem NY Dutch Reformed Church the daughter of Albert Louw and Susanna
Delamater He died in January 1775 testate in Bridgewater, Hillsborough
Township, Martje survived him
Their fourth child of record was Maria Lowe who married Peter Peterson.
If you are unable to get a microfilm copy of my book on the Pittenger
families in New Jersey I still have a few copies for which I am asking $30
which is my cost of printing and mailing, or if you want I could send you a
detailed comment on the generation information in your e-mail to Priss, some
of which is incorrect. I hope this is of some help to you. Tress Pittenger.
