SEVENTH GENERATION

124. Anthony Wayne McKee was born on 1 Jun 1795 in Pennsylvania. He died on 22 Sep 1868 in Fulton County, IN. He was buried in Rochester (Fulton), IN. He was married to Nancy Agnew on 2 May 1816 in Butler County, OH.

125. Nancy Agnew was born on 9 Mar 1801 in New Jersey. She died on 5 Mar 1860 in Fulton County, IN. She was buried in McKee Cemetery., Rochester Township (Fulton) IN. She was in Shaker?. Ms. TAUNTON, in the excerpts sent from SHAKERS OF OHIO and THE GREENING OF WEST BRANCH, does not say whether Nancy AGNEW was ever a member of the Shaker movement; however, members of her family were. List of members for 1835 include the names of some of her brothers and sisters; also, after the death of her father, her mother, Margaret (BRANT) AGNEW married Joseph BOGGETT. The BOGGETTs were members of the "Center Family," one of three divisions of the Whitewater Shaker Community.

Page 214 of THE GREENING OF WEST BRANCH states:

"Shaker societies were divided into two or more "families" of about thirty members each. They all lived in one large house but with separate entrances and bedrooms for each sex. Whitewater Village was divided into families, including the "Center Family," where Joseph and "Peggy" (Margaret AGNEW) BOGGETT lived, and the "South Family," headed by Joseph AGNEW (Nancy's brother.) The spiritual affairs were governed by the "elders," two men and two women, who were accountable to the ministry, or "the elders of the elders." Joseph AGNEW was elder in the South Family of Whitewater Village.
"Deacons" or "trustees" were charged with overseeing the business affairs of the community and reported directly to the elders. Brant AGNEW (another of Nancy's brothers) was named as a village trustee in 1831."

Another excerpt taken from this book, page 235 states:

"[February 1824] At Union Village the Darby people were joined by Thomas HUNT, who went with them to Whitewater, where all arrived in safety. They first stopped with Anthony McKEE, but after ten days got possession of their new land, and moved into a cabin eighteen feet square, with a lean-to in the rear. Necessity compelled them to use this until larger quarters could be obtained."
It is obvious from this excerpt, that Anthony and Nancy McKEE were, at least, accepting of the Shaker groups, and were helpful in their migration to Butler County, OH, whether or not they were active members of the society.
The McKEES had migrated from Butler County to Shelby County, IN by census time in 1840. Sometime before the 1850 Census, they moved again to Fulton County, near Rochester, IN.
Nancy (AGNEW) McKEE died in Fulton County in March, 1860. Her husband, Anthony Wayne, aged 64 was enumerated in the home of their son Albert Russell McKEE, in the dwelling just next to James KEELY and his wife, Mary (McKEE) in 1860.
Oct., 1995, Wilma FOLTZ, genealogical researcher and desc. of the MOW family, furnished photocopies of data taken from the McKEE Cemetery. On page 53 of this photocopy, the following data appears:

"This abandoned burying ground is on the Old Alonzo Sheets (now Joseph Richards) farm, R.R. 3, in Rochester Twp, Fulton Co., IN... 250 North, about one and three-tenths miles west of 250N & 400W... 1 & 1/2 mi. west of Loyal...
...the very back of a field, in the corner, about two city blocks north of the road, and behind an old barn...
The graves are broken and very difficult to locate, most of the pieces being under ground..." (in 1935 DAR published a listing for this cemetery, but included only 4 graves) "...Information was recorded October 5, 1975... McKEE, (first piece) Nancy, wife of A.McKEE (broken under her name). (2nd piece) died Mar. 5, 1860, age 59 yr - 11 mo. (broken here and rest of stone is missing)
(Note: These two pieces of this stone were found separately, but they fit together perfectly. They definitely belong together..."
Also recorded as one of the graves in the McKEE Cemetery is that of "(-----), Olive M., dau. of -------.
(Note: Top part of this marker was all that was found. It is a child-type marker with a lamb carved in the top."

This could have been a child of Nancy AGNEW and Anthony McKEE, or it could have been their grandchild, a daughter of David A. and Sarah (STRAUP) McKEE.

Marj Edlen reports that McKee and Nancy Agnew "travelled to Hamilton Co. Ohio sometime in the 1790's (perhaps a party of the Symmes Group.)" She also reported that "we are not sure if Nancy and Anthony were members (of the Whitewater Society of Shakers) but they did hhouse some 'travelling' Shakers for a bit. We also have a letter that makes reference to the death (suicide) of one of Nancy and Anthony's children." (email 7/16/2003, edlen@@gallatinriver.net)
Cathleen Ganzel has birth month as April, same day and year. Children were:

child i. David A. McKee was born on 25 Oct 1816 in Ohio. He died on 20 Feb 1873 in Fulton County, IN.
child ii. Mary A. McKee was born on 17 Jun 1818 in Hamilton County, OH. She died on 21 Dec 1892 in Rochester (Fulton), IN.
child iii. Albert "Russell" McKee was born about 1819 in Ohio. He died after 1872. He was in Shaker ?.
child iv. Sylvester McKee was born about 1824 in prob. Ohio. He died in Shelby County, IN. Ms. TAUNTON has provided only the 1830 census which may include Sylvester as the "1 male 5-10 years old," that appears in the McKEE household in Butler County, OH. Compiler has assumed the place of birth as OHIO because of the timing...this family was in OHIO 1820 and 1830 at census enumeration time.
Ms. TAUNTON states that Sylvester died in Shelby Co., IN , but she did not include her source of this information.
There is a marriage record in Fulton County, IN for a Sylvester McKEE to Martha DOWNS, 18 FEB 1869. This would have been when this Sylvester was over 40 years of age, so this may be a different Sylvester McKEE.
child v. Jesse McKee was born about 1829 in Ohio. He died on 17 Sep 1871 in Fulton County, IN.
child vi. Isaac McKee was born about 1830 in Ohio.
child62 vii. Brant McKee.
child viii. George Riley McKee was born about 1834 in Shelby County, IN. He died on 15 Jul 1885 in Fulton County, IN. ALLOWANCES MADE BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF FULTON COUNTY, IND., AT THEIR SEPT TERM, 1876.
(names mentioned) ...,GEORGE R. McKEE,
child ix. Phoebe McKee was born about 1835 in Indiana. She died about 1888 in Missouri.
child x. William McKee was born about 1836 in Indiana.
child xi. James McKee was born on 26 Nov 1838 in Shelby County, IN. He died on 14 Jan 1859 in Fulton County, IN. There were obviously some errors made in tallying the children in the McKEE family in the 1840 Census for Shelby Co. There simply are not enough counted to account for all of Anthony Wayne MCKEE's children in each age group. No other references were provided for Ms. TAUNTON's data on this James McKEE.
Oct., 1995, Wilma FOLTZ sent compiler a photocopy of a two and one-half page record of the graves in the McKEE Cemetery in Fulton Co. The record includes the following information:
"This abandoned burying ground is on the Old Alonzo Sheets (now Joseph Richards) farm, R.R. 3, in Rochester twp, Fulton Co....It is on 250 North, about one and three-tenths miles west of 250 N & 400 W.... about 1-1/2 mi. west of Loyal...
The cemetery is at the very back of a field, in the corner, about two city blocks north of the road, and behind an old barn which sets on the north side of the road...
The graves are broken and very difficult to locate...
Information was recorded October 5, 1975...McKEE, James, son of A. & N. McKee, died Jan. 14, 1859, age 20yr-1mo-18da. (broken across age line)"
There is also an explanation that this cemetery was recorded by a chapter of the DAR in 1935, but only about 4 graves were included in that record.

child xii. Martin McKee was born about 1842 in Indiana.
