Range

I enjoy a challenge, love to learn, and relish variety. That’s probably why I left behind a career as a specialized scholar and followed a route that took me into a broader range of experience. There are, of course, some subjects I avoid because they don't interest me or I don't feel competent to handle them. But those are rather few.

The following are some of the areas in which I've worked comfortably:

  • Business strategy
  • Information technology
  • Change management
  • Legal discovery strategies
  • Marketing
  • Personal productivity
  • Software documentation
  • Aerospace engineering

Try me in your subject area.

  • Insurance and employee benefits
  • Religion and mental health
  • Political analysis
  • Medicine
  • History
  • Film criticism
  • Personal memoirs
  • Motivational/self-development

Collaborative Books and Articles

I particularly enjoy collaborative work, whether it's a 50/50 co-authorship or editorial work with a solo author. Here are some of my projects:

Souls in the Hands of a Tender God: The Search for Home and Healing on the Streets (Beacon, 2008), which I co-authored with Craig Rennebohm, is in part a memoir of Chaplain Rennebohm’s work with mentally ill homeless people, in part an exploration of the work of the Spirit acting within us, and in part a challenge to readers to help build caring communities. Read an excerpt.

“A masterpiece of storytelling that has tremendous potential to continue the transformation of our churches and society into a safety net of unbroken relationships.” – Rev. Patrick Howell, S.J., Vice-President, Seattle University

“This beautifully written book is a must read for those personally affected by mental illness. It is of even greater value for those who are not.” – Gunnar Christiansen, M.D., founder of FaithNet NAMI

Transplanted: A Memoir of Faith and Vision for American Muslims Amana Publications, 2008) is the story of a man who has lived in both the Islamic world and the West, and who sees clearly that Islam is compatible with modernity and Western civilization. For Westerners who rely on the oversimplifications of the popular media for their impressions of Islam and Muslims, the book is an eye-opener. For current and future generations of Muslims in America and Europe, it is a call to explore their heritage, understand it, cherish it, preserve it, and draw from it inspirations and ideas that they can contribute to the betterment of their adopted homeland.

My role in the writing of Transplanted was to help the author frame the narrative and to find the right words for expressing it.

The Good Doctor Is Naked, published in 2004, is a memoir by Robert Hardy Barnes, MD. My role was to help the author turn a loosely written manuscript into a well-structured book, find the book's theme and focus the narrative around it, fill gaps in the material, polish the writing throughout, and develop a proposal and marketing plan. Please click here to see an excerpt. Copies of the book are available from the publisher, iUniverse, as well as Barnes and Noble and other online booksellers.

“The Good Doctor Is Naked is a deeply moving account of someone making peace with himself and others and coming to terms with a painful and burdensome past. It will be a considerable help to many.” – Archbishop Desmond Tutu

How to Publish

How to Publish on the Internet resulted from a collaboration with Andrew Fry, who approached me in 1994 with the idea of writing a book. Most people then had never heard of the Internet, and I had to ask, “What does it mean to publish on the Net?” Andrew explained it to me over lunch and told me about his new company, Free Range Media, one of the first in the world to build and host Web sites commercially. I knew nothing about the subject; Andrew knew it all. Our book was the product of Andrew's knowledge and my writing and research abilities. Please click here to see an excerpt.

“Easy reading, good concise guide to the web-weaving process.” – NetTeach.com

Globally Speaking  is an article series that I co-authored with Martin A. Schell, an American expatriate living in Indonesia. This is a “pure” collaboration in which Martin and I passed drafts back and forth across the Pacific Ocean via the Internet. Click here for more information and some samples.

“Globally Speaking provides a real service to business travelers as well as managers assigned to overseas branches. I know of nothing that approaches the subject of intercultural communication in the same way.” – Prof. Michael J. Capek, Stern School of Business, New York University.
