The Caldecott Medal, presented by the American Library Association, is awarded annually to the illustrator of the most distinguished picture book for children published in the United States during the preceding year. The award is named in honor of the illustrator Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886). When two names are given, the first name is that of the medalist and the second name is that of the author. In cases where only one name is given, the book was written and illustrated by the same person.
